Pendant trois ans, WASTE LAND suit l’artiste brésilien Vik Muniz de Brooklyn, où il vit, à Jardim Gramacho en banlieue de Rio de Janeiro. Dans la plus vaste décharge du monde, il retrouve son Brésil natal pour un projet artistique inédit : photographier les « catadores » (les ramasseurs de déchets recyclables) dans des mises en scènes composées à partir d’objets et matériaux rescapés des poubelles.

Winner of audience awards at Sundance and Berlin, WASTE LAND travels with acclaimed artist, Vik Muniz, to the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, to a particularly unusual site of creative production. Art and poverty collide at Jardim Gramacho – the world’s largest rubbish dump. What starts as a simple exploration for Muniz becomes a profound encounter with a band of catadores, who make a living picking recyclable materials. The creative collaboration that ensues deals not only with important environmental and social issues, but restores dignity to a group of people tossed aside by society, like the garbage with which they work.
