Les communautés de l’Afrique de Sud se révoltent. Fatiguées d’attendre que l’Etat tienne ses promesses de libération, et faisant face à la pauvreté grandissante, elles ont à nouveau décider de descendre dans les rues. Les manifestations ont augmenté en nombre et en volatilité depuis le début des années 2000, atteignant de nouveaux records en 2010. CITIZEN X est un portrait inébranlable de trouble civile dans la nouvelle Afrique du Sud, récemment couronnée comme société la plus inégale du monde.

A travers les expériences des chefs communautaires à Alexandra, à Soweto et à Khutsong, le film suit avec critique les potentiels débuts d’une résistance populaire et pose des questions difficiles sur le mouvement et l’Etat contre qui ils se dressent. Est-ce que ces manifestations exigent que l’utopie d’une égalité pour tous soit au centre de l’attention… et si non, pourquoi ?
