Moussa, fils de harki et Jean-Luc habitent Saint-Denis, en banlieue parisienne. Ils assistent par hasard au cambriolage d’une banque puis à l’arrestation des voleurs. Pendant que sa mère arrange à distance son mariage, Moussa récupère le butin d’un voleur. Il décide alors de réaliser son rêve : ouvrir un café. Dans l’arrière-salle, son copain Jean-Luc installe un bureau d’avocat…
Le cœur d’une cité, au nord de Paris, Saint-Denis, qui a parfois l’allure d’une petite ville de province. Le tranway bleu et silencieux qui la sillonne. L’avenue piétonne qui fourmille de mille et une activités. La basilique où reposent les rois de France, assaillie par un béton aux formes audacieuses, et des quartiers HLM réhabilités mais excentrés qui nous rappellent que l’on est bien en banlieue. Dans cette cohue et cacophonie urbaines, une jeunesse qui vit en plein jour un coktail pétillant de contradictions. Ils ont entre vingt et trente ans : Moussa, le fils de Harki ; Jean-Luc, ami intime de Moussa ; Farida, qui cache ses cheveux sous un foulard ; Souad, sa sœur aînée, rebelle, qui a coupé les siens à la garçonne…

In Malick Chibane’s comic exploration of suburban life, the booty from a jewellery theft is like a godsend for Moussa and Jean-Luc, two young men who just need a break.
»Sweet France » unfolds in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis in the early 90s and revolves around the lives of some of its inhabitants, among them the two friends Moussa and Jean-Luc, and the two sisters Farida and Souad. All four are trying to make sense of a society that tries to label and limit them for different reasons and in different ways.
The girls could not be more different, with one of them being an emancipated rebel and the other a devote Muslim. Moussa and Jean-Luc become rich over night when they get their hands on the booty from a jewellery theft. Moussa uses his share of the money to buy a bar while Jean-Luc starts his own a law firm. One day Moussa finds out that his mother is planning his marriage.
« Sweet France », released the same year as the cult film « La Haine », is the second film in Malick Chibane’s popular urban trilogy.
