Le chat d’un rabbin d’Alger se met à parler et demande alors à faire sa Bar-Mitsva.

Alger, années 1920. Le rabbin Sfar vit avec sa fille Zlabya, un perroquet bruyant et un chat espiègle qui dévore le perroquet et se met à parler pour ne dire que des mensonges. Le rabbin veut l’éloigner. Mais le chat, fou amoureux de sa petite maîtresse, est prêt à tout pour rester auprès d’elle… même à faire sa bar mitsva ! Le rabbin devra enseigner à son chat les rudiments de loi mosaïque ! Une lettre apprend au rabbin que pour garder son poste, il doit se soumettre à une dictée en français. Pour l’aider, son chat commet le sacrilège d’invoquer l’Eternel. Le rabbin réussit mais le chat ne parle plus. On le traite de nouveau comme un animal ordinaire. Son seul ami sera bientôt un peintre russe en quête d’une Jérusalem imaginaire où vivraient des Juifs noirs. Il parvient à convaincre le rabbin, un ancien soldat du Tsar, un chanteur et le chat de faire avec lui la route coloniale…

Ce film réalisé par Joann Sfar et Antoine Delesvaux reprend le scénario des tomes 1, 2 et 5, d’après Le Chat du Rabbin, une bande dessinée de Joann Sfar. Sortie prévue pour le 1er juin 2011. Il s’agit d’une animation en 3D.

The setting: Algiers in the 1930s. Nazism is on the rise in Europe; in the Soviet Union, pogroms are setting Jewish villageson fire. At the rabbi’s house, a skinny gray cat swallows the family parrot and, miraculously, begins to talk, to the delightof the rabbi and his beautiful daughter Zlabya (played by rising star Hafsia Herzi.) Director biography
Joann Sfar (France, 1971) is one of the leading artists of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics. From 2009 to 2010, he wrote anddirected Serge Gainsbourg: Une Vie Heroique, a biopic of the famous French songwriter.

Antoine Delesvaux (France, 1979) is co-founder of the La Station Animation production studios. In 2005, he produced the short film Raoul Superstar. In 2007, he founded a new company, Autochenille Production, with Clément Oubrerie and Joann Sfar.

Lo sfondo: Algeri negli anni ‘30. Il nazismo è in ascesa in tutta Europa; in Unione Sovietica, i pogrom danno fuoco aivillaggi ebrei. Nella casa del rabbino, un gatto grigio e magro mangia il pappagallo di famiglia, e, per miracolo, inizia aparlare, per la gioia del rabbino e della bella figlia Zlabya (l’emergente Hafsia Herzi.) Il gatto filosofo è senza peli sulla lingua,e ha molte cose da dire: un suo desiderio è di diventare ebreo e fare il Bar Mitzvah! Questo film d’animazione, divertente ecommovente, trabocca di incredibili personaggi che fanno riferimento alla storia, alla letteratura, ai fumetti e al cinema. Joann Sfar (Francia, 1971) è uno degli artisti più importanti della nuova generazione dei fumettisti franco-belga. Dal 2009 al 2010,Sfar ha scritto e diretto Serge Gainsbourgh: Une Vie Heroique, biopic del famoso chansonnier francese.

Antoine Delesvaux (Francia, 1979) ha fondato gli studi di produzione La Station Animation. Nel 2005, ha prodotto il cortometraggioRaoul Superstar. Nel 2007 ha creato una nuova compagnia, Autochenille Production, insieme a Clément Oubrerie e Joann Sfar.
