« 1994 » raconte le quotidien de deux groupes rivaux qui vivent dans deux faubourgs de Rio de Janeiro (au nord de la ville, le long de l’Avenue Brasil). 1994 est l’année où le Brésil qui soutient son équipe à la Coupe du monde, se voit confronté aux changements économiques entraînés par l’arrivée d’une nouvelle monnaie – le Plan Real (un programme de stabilisation économique dont l’objectif principal était le contrôle de l’inflation qui affligeait le pays) – et attend des élections présidentielles définitivement démocratiques. Dans ce contexte, le film « 1994 » propose de montrer le quotidien de trois jeunes de la banlieue de Rio en abordant des sujets tels que la liberté, l’identité et la conquête de territoires.

Ce film sera produit par le groupe Nós do Morro, une institution reconnue pour la formation des acteurs et la qualité de ses productions, en collaboration avec Luz Mágica (maison de production de Carlos Diegues). Cette année, le groupe Nós do Morro, qui a commencé en mai 1986, fêtera ses 25 ans d’activités. Le film bénéficiera du soutien du gouvernement et des crédits d’impôts gérés par Riofilme / CTAv et Ancine.

Le projet du réalisateur brésilien Gustavo Melo 1994 (et sa productrice Manuelle Rosa) a été sélectionné pour participer à l’atelier Produire au Sud – Belo Horizonte, du 17 au 22 septembre 2011 au Brésil.

« 1994 » gives an account of the everyday life of two rival gangs who live in two neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, (in the north of the city, along the Brazil Avenue). In the year 1994 Brazil, which was supporting its team at the World Cup, was faced with economic changes brought about by the arrival of a new currency – the Real Plan (a programme which intended to stabilise the economy and in particular control the inflation rate which was tormenting the country) – and the organisation of democratic presidential elections. This is the setting for the film « 1994 » which shows the everyday life of three young people from the suburbs of Rio and tackles issues such as freedom, identity and the control of territories.

The Nós do Morro group, which was created in May 1986, will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. The film will also include support from government and their agencies that approve the tax incentive laws: Riofilme / CTAv (Audiovisual Technical Center) and Ancine.
