Une enfant vit comme prostituée à la La New Orleans, en 1917.

Violet, 12 ans, vit dans un bordel de La Nouvelle-Orléans où travaille sa mère Kattie. Celle-ci n’a pas le temps de s’occuper d’elle et la fait passer pour sa soeur quand cela l’arrange. Un jour, le photographe Bellocq vient prendre des clichés de Kattie et Violet. Puis il revient souvent sans « consommer », ce qui intrigue Violet qui le considère à la fois comme son père et son amoureux. Kattie, à qui un client propose le mariage et une vie respectable à Saint-Louis, n’ose pas avouer à son époux qu’elle a une fille et abandonne Violet au bordel. Après une punition injuste, la fillette s’enfuit et part habiter chez Bellocq…
