Habib rêve de former son précieux mouton pour devenir un champion de combat et Samir, âgé de seize ans, veut simplement vendre suffisamment de moutons avant l’Aid El Kébir (Fête du sacrifice) pour joindre les deux bouts, dans ce profil émouvant de deux hommes dans une communauté algérienne appauvrie.

Alger, Bab el Oued, 2016. Habib, 16 ans, rêve de devenir vétérinaire. Mais alors qu’il a arrêté l’école, il décide d’entraîner un bélier nommé « El Bouq » espérant en faire un champion de combats de moutons. Samir, 42 ans, n’a plus d’autres rêves que de survivre aux difficultés de son quotidien en vendant des moutons pour gagner un peu d’argent.
Alors que l’Aïd approche et que tout le pays s’apprête à sacrifier un mouton, une occasion unique s’offre à Samir d’augmenter ses bénéfices. Mais pour Habib, c’est une autre histoire. El Bouq deviendra-t-il un champion ? Ou sera-t-il destiné à une fin plus tragique?

Les béliers aux noms combattifs sont nombreux dans les cours des Algérois à l’approche du sacrifice de l’Aïd. Habib et Samir tentent de mettre à profit la situation mais rien n’est simple. L’humour est présent, envers du tragique d’une société où « le grand poisson mange le petit poisson ». Dans ce film de 2017, Karim Sayad prend appui sur ces deux portraits pour rendre palpables les espoirs et les contradictions. Il leur donne la parole et se fait discret, les laissant se mettre en scène. Et nous permet ainsi de sentir de l’intérieur l’espace entre rêve et nécessité. »

It’s a tale of two men, one country, and many sheep. Habib is 16 years old, working as a bus conductor although he had once dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. He is the proud owner of El Bouq, a ram he hopes to raise to become a champion fighter. Samir is 42 years old, having seen enough hardship to know the cost of dreaming is high and that everything in life has the potential to bring a profit. He capitalizes on this ethos at Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) by buying and selling sheep for the coming slaughter. When El Bouq proves to be a far-from-illustrious combatant, and with Eid fast approaching, it looks as though the animal’s fate might not be a favourable one.

Building on the style and themes explored in his award-winning short Babor Casanova, Karim Sayad explores in his documentary feature debut the current climate in Algeria following the Arab Spring with an allegorical and intricate eye. Shot in the Bab el Oued neighbourhood of Algiers, with a camera that sinks seamlessly into each scenario, the film captures Habib’s, Samir’s, and even the sheep’s perspectives with an intriguing sense of intimacy that’s rich with symbolism.
