Dans un Casablanca déjanté, la passion brûlante de Larsen le rocker et de Rajae l’Amazone des rues met le feu à un Maroc inattendu peuplé de Calamity Janes berbères, de concerts de métal, de serpents venimeux et de flics tortionnaires. Un trauma enfoui commun les rapproche : le rock n’roll les unit, la voix d’or de Rajae et la guitare en peau de serpent de Larsen. Peut- être leur seul espoir réside-t-il dans une chanson, celle qu’ils rêvent et écrivent à deux : Zanka Contact.

Dans mon esprit, Zanka Contact n’est pas un film mais un feu sauvage. L’envie de ce film m’a consumé comme une flamme, dévorant tout sur son passage. Tout ce que j’aime : les groupes de rock marocains des années 1970 et les westerns italiens, les bagues tête de mort en argent et les personnages féminins puissants ; le rêve de la musique live sur cinémascope 35 mm et la poésie de rue de l’argot de Casablanca. Le feu s’est nourri de tout ce que je redoute aussi, mêlant le tout en un cocktail enflammé agité par une fiction déjantée. Pour moi, l’émotion est la seule réalité.
En tant que cinéaste africain, je veux revendiquer mon droit à la fiction, à l’imaginaire, à un territoire rarement occupé par les films de ma région. Le cinéma ce n’est pas le sujet ; il ne s’agit même pas de l’histoire. C’est un sort sous lequel nous tombons : c’est une croyance en la magie. C’est, pour moi, la dimension politique de Zanka Contact : revendiquer une part dans ce rêve partagé, non pas pour son sujet mais pour sa sorcellerie.

In hellish Casablanca, a car-crash sets ablaze a burning, passionate love story between has-been rocker Larsen and the streetwise amazon Rajae. An unspoken trauma is their common history; rock’n’roll their mutual saviour. Larsen’s snakeskin-covered guitar and Rajae’s liquid gold voice could be heaven, if only everything from his drug-induced visions to her music-buff pimp didn’t get in the way. The only hope for their blooming romance is to skip this ferocious town. Is there a way out of this crazy Moroccan underworld with its menagerie of sadistic cops, venomous snakes, metal concerts and shotgun-wielding modern-day Calamity Janes? For these punk Romeo and Juliet, maybe the answer lies in a song-the one they’ve been writing and dreaming together: Zanka Contact.

Director’s statement
In my mind, Zanka Contact is not a film but a wild fire. The desire for this movie consumed me like a flame, devouring everything in its path. Everything I love: 1970s Moroccan rock bands and Italian westerns, silver skull rings and powerful women characters; the dream of live music on 35mm Cinemascope and the street poetry of Casablanca’s slang. The fire fed on everything I dread too, mixing it all into a flaming cocktail stirred by unhinged fiction. To me, emotion is the only reality.
As an African filmmaker I want to claim my right to fiction, to imagination, to a territory seldom occupied by films from my region. Cinema is not about the subject; it’s not even about the story. It’s a spell we fall under: it’s a belief in magic. That, to me, is the political stance of Zanka Contact: to claim a part in this shared dream, not for its subject but for its witchcraft.

In una Casablanca infernale, un incidente d’auto è la miccia che accende un’ardente, appassionata storia d’amore tra Larsen, ex musicista rock, e Rajae, amazzone cresciuta alla scuola della strada. In comune hanno un trauma taciuto, ma il rock’n’roll può significare per entrambi la salvezza. La chitarra di Larsen, ricoperta di pelle di serpente, e la voce di Rajae, simile a oro liquido, potrebbero diventare il paradiso, se soltanto ogni cosa, dalle visioni di lui provocate dalla droga al protettore di lei esperto di musica, non si mettesse in mezzo. L’unica speranza per il loro amore è andarsene da una città così spietata. Esiste un modo per sfuggire alla pazzesca malavita marocchina, con il suo serraglio di poliziotti sadici, serpenti velenosi, concerti metal e contemporanee Calamity Jane, con tanto di fucile? Per questi Romeo e Giulietta punk, forse la risposta è nascosta in una canzone, quella che stanno scrivendo e sognando insieme: Zanka Contact.

Commento del regista
Nella mia mente, Zanka Contact non è un film, ma un incendio incontrollato. Il desiderio di fare questo film mi ha consumato come una fiamma che divora tutto al suo passaggio. Tutto ciò che amo: le rock band marocchine degli anni Settanta, i western italiani, gli anelli d’argento a forma di teschio, le donne dal carattere forte, il sogno di musica live in Cinemascope 35mm e la poesia della strada nello slang di Casablanca. Il fuoco si è nutrito anche di tutto quello che mi fa paura, mescolando ogni cosa in un cocktail fiammeggiante, agitato da un racconto squinternato. Per me, l’emozione è l’unica realtà. Da regista africano, rivendico il diritto alla finzione, all’immaginazione, a un territorio di rado occupato da film girati nella mia terra. Il cinema non è l’argomento, né la storia. È un incantesimo di cui diventiamo prigionieri: significa credere nella magia. Questa, per me, è la linea politica di Zanka Contact: rivendicare un ruolo in questo sogno condiviso, non per l’argomento, ma per la sua magia.

Director’s statement
In my mind, Zanka Contact is not a film but a wild fire. The desire for this movie consumed me like a flame, devouring everything in its path. Everything I love: 1970s Moroccan rock bands and Italian westerns, silver skull rings and powerful women characters; the dream of live music on 35mm Cinemascope and the street poetry of Casablanca’s slang. The fire fed on everything I dread too, mixing it all into a flaming cocktail stirred by unhinged fiction. To me, emotion is the only reality.
As an African filmmaker I want to claim my right to fiction, to imagination, to a territory seldom occupied by films from my region. Cinema is not about the subject; it’s not even about the story. It’s a spell we fall under: it’s a belief in magic. That, to me, is the political stance of Zanka Contact: to claim a part in this shared dream, not for its subject but for its witchcraft.

In una Casablanca infernale, un incidente d’auto è la miccia che accende un’ardente, appassionata storia d’amore tra Larsen, ex musicista rock, e Rajae, amazzone cresciuta alla scuola della strada. In comune hanno un trauma taciuto, ma il rock’n’roll può significare per entrambi la salvezza. La chitarra di Larsen, ricoperta di pelle di serpente, e la voce di Rajae, simile a oro liquido, potrebbero diventare il paradiso, se soltanto ogni cosa, dalle visioni di lui provocate dalla droga al protettore di lei esperto di musica, non si mettesse in mezzo. L’unica speranza per il loro amore è andarsene da una città così spietata. Esiste un modo per sfuggire alla pazzesca malavita marocchina, con il suo serraglio di poliziotti sadici, serpenti velenosi, concerti metal e contemporanee Calamity Jane, con tanto di fucile? Per questi Romeo e Giulietta punk, forse la risposta è nascosta in una canzone, quella che stanno scrivendo e sognando insieme: Zanka Contact.

Commento del regista
Nella mia mente, Zanka Contact non è un film, ma un incendio incontrollato. Il desiderio di fare questo film mi ha consumato come una fiamma che divora tutto al suo passaggio. Tutto ciò che amo: le rock band marocchine degli anni Settanta, i western italiani, gli anelli d’argento a forma di teschio, le donne dal carattere forte, il sogno di musica live in Cinemascope 35mm e la poesia della strada nello slang di Casablanca. Il fuoco si è nutrito anche di tutto quello che mi fa paura, mescolando ogni cosa in un cocktail fiammeggiante, agitato da un racconto squinternato. Per me, l’emozione è l’unica realtà. Da regista africano, rivendico il diritto alla finzione, all’immaginazione, a un territorio di rado occupato da film girati nella mia terra. Il cinema non è l’argomento, né la storia. È un incantesimo di cui diventiamo prigionieri: significa credere nella magia. Questa, per me, è la linea politica di Zanka Contact: rivendicare un ruolo in questo sogno condiviso, non per l’argomento, ma per la sua magia.
