Nous sommes en 1916 en Ethiopie. Gobeze est un jeune homme timide et pacifique de 25 ans, un brillant étudiant qui croque la vie à pleines dents. Il s’enfuit avec son jeune amour, mais ils sont pris par le mari de celle-ci. La tradition éthiopienne veut que les deux hommes soient « enchaînés » et partent pour un long voyage vers la cour royale. Pendant le voyage, les deux hommes rencontrent un certain nombre de défis.
