Lorsque Ali meurt, toute la population est sous le choc. Il faut dire que c’était un brave cavalier, parmi les rares qui portaient le sobriquet de « Allam al khayl » (« Le maître cavalier », en arabe). Hammadi ne supporte pas la mort de son père, Ali. La douleur est telle qu’il devient muet. Hammadi n’a plus rien, à part un collier traditionnel et une photographie légués par son père Ali et qui illustre sa passion pour la cavalerie. L’état de Hammadi s’aggrave et il plonge dans la dépression. Il faut dire qu’il a été délaissé par les siens. Sous la pression de la famille, sa mère se marie. Sa cousine et son meilleur ami à qui il se confiait quittent le village pour étudier en ville. Bref, Hammadi reste seul. Enfin, il a un compagnon sur lequel il peut compter : un petit poulain dont il prend grand soin. Hammadi grandit. Il devient l’un des meilleurs chevaliers du village à l’image de son père. Pourra-t-il, à travers cette passion, surmonter sa solitude ?
