Khitam est une Palestinienne née à Gaza. Après un mariage arrangé, elle a vécu avec un Arabe israélien, l’a suivi en Israël et lui a donné six enfants. Lorsque son mari a décidé de divorcer – divorce qui s’est fait selon la loi musulmane, en son absence – il a obtenu la garde des enfants et Khitam s’est retrouvée dans le plus grand dénuement. Non seulement elle ne pouvait plus avoir de contacts avec ses enfants, mais de plus elle n’avait pas le moindre bien. Bien que mariée à un Israélien, elle n’a jamais obtenu la nationalité israélienne. C’est dans ce contexte qu’elle se lance dans le plus grand combat de sa vie : défendre sa cause devant le tribunal de la Charia, toujours favorable à la cause des pères, et contre l’État. Khitam souhaite pouvoir rester dans le pays au sein d’un centre d’accueil pour femmes battues et continuer son combat pour la garde de ses enfants.

Khitam, a Gaza Band born Palestinian woman, was married off in an arranged match to an Israeli Arab, followed him to Israel and bore him six children. When her husband divorced her – in absentia – in the Sharia (Muslim) court he gained custody of the children and Khitam was left with nothing. She cannot contact the children and has no property. Although married to an Israeli, she does not have an Israeli citizenship. Now she is out on a dual battle, the most crucial of her life: against the Sharia court – which always rules in favor of the husband – and against the State, in an effort to gain a temporary permit to stay in Israel in a shelter for abused women, while fighting for custody of her children.
