Zakes Mda

Zakes Mda (de son vrai nom Zanemvula Kizito Gatyeni Mda) est né en 1948 à Herschel, dans la province du Cap, et a passé son adolescence au Lesotho, avec sa famille, exilée pour des raisons politiques. Peintre, poète et dramaturge de renom, il a aussi enseigné la littérature africaine au Lesotho et aux Etats-Unis. De retour en Afrique du Sud en 1995, il publie son premier roman « She Plays with the Darkness » (non traduit), puis « Le Pleureur » (Dapper, 1999). « Au pays de l’ocre rouge », son troisième roman, a reçu le prix du Commmonwealth en 2001. Son quatrième roman, « La Madone d’Excelsior », est paru au Seuil en 2004.
Il a écrit la pièce de Théâtre « La Route » portée à la scène par Ewlyne Guillaume (France, 2007, filmée par François Dubreuil).
Son roman The Whale Caller est en train d’être porté à l’écran par le Sud-africain Zola maseko et Zakes en est le scénariste.

Zakes Mda (full names: Zanemvula Kizito Gatyeni Mda) is a South African writer, painter, composer and film maker. He commutes between South Africa and the United States of America, working as a professor of creative writing at Ohio University, as a beekeeper in the Eastern Cape, a dramaturge at the Market Theatre, Johannesburg, and a director of the Southern African Multimedia AIDS Trust in Sophiatown, Johannesburg.

Zakes Mda is one of South Africa’s leading novelists, in between working as a professor of creative writing at Ohio University. He wears many hats, including those of beekeeper, painter, composer and film maker. He also serves as a director of the Southern African Multimedia AIDS Trust. In addition to writing the novel The Whale Caller, Zakes also wrote the original screenplay for Zola Maseko (work in progress).

The Whale Caller was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize.
