Benicio Del Toro

Benicio Del Toro a été consacré en 2000 par TRAFFIC de Steven Soderbergh, qui lui a valu l’Oscar du meilleur second rôle, le Golden Globe, l’Ours d’Argent du Festival de Berlin, le British Academy Award, le Screen Actors Guild Award, le New York Film Critics Circle Award, les prix de la Chicago Film Critics Association et de la National Society of Film Critics. Sa poignante prestation dans 21 GRAMMES d’Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu lui a rapporté en 2003 une deuxième citation à l’Oscar, le Prix du Public au Festival de Venise. Del Toro a également collaboré avec Peter Weir, Sean Penn, Bryan Singer, Abel Ferrara, Terry Gilliam, Julian Schnabel, William Friedkin et Robert Rodriguez et obtenu l’Independent Spirit Award du meilleur second rôle dans THE USUAL SUSPECTS de Singer et BASQUIAT de Schnabel.

Né à Porto Rico, Benicio Del Toro a passé sa jeunesse en Pennsylvanie et fait ses études à l’Université de San Diego. Après une participation au festival du Lafayette Theater de New York, il poursuit sa formation au Conservatoire Stella Adler de New York et à l’Actors Circle Theater de Los Angeles. Il décroche en 1987 son premier rôle à la télévision dans un épisode de « Deux flics à Miami » avant de faire ses premières armes dans PERMIS DE TUER de John Glen, INDIAN RUNNER de Sean Penn et ÉTAT SECOND de Peter Weir.

Producer BENICIO DEL TORO, who also plays Che [CHE, Steven Soderbergh, 2008], has earned critical acclaim for his poignant and powerful performances throughout his career. Winning an Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actor in Steven Soderbergh’s « TRAFFIC », his performance also garnered him Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, New York Film Critics Circle, National Society of Film Critics, Chicago Film Critics Association, and Silver Bear [Berlin International Film Festival] awards.

Del Toro also earned an Academy Award® nomination for his role in Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu’s « 21 GRAMS », for which he also won the Audience Award for Best Actor at the 2003 Venice International Film Festival. He has also received two Independent Spirit Awards for Best Supporting Actor: for Bryan Singer’s « THE USUAL SUSPECTS » and Julian Schnabel’s « BASQUIAT ». He has most recently appeared in Susanne Bier’s « THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE » and Robert Rodriguez’s « SIN CITY ».

Del Toro made his motion picture debut in John Glen’s « LICENCE TO KILL », opposite Timothy Dalton as James Bond. Subsequent films include Peter Weir’s « FEARLESS », George Huang’s « SWIMMING WITH SHARKS », Abel Ferrara’s « THE FUNERAL », Marco Brambilla’s « EXCESS BAGGAGE », Terry Gilliam’s « FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS », Christopher McQuarrie’s « THE WAY OF THE GUN », Guy Ritchie’s « SNATCH », William Friedkin’s « THE HUNTED » and « THE INDIAN RUNNER » and « THE PLEDGE », both directed by Sean Penn.

Born in Puerto Rico, Del Toro grew up in Pennsylvania. He attended the University of California at San Diego and studied acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory under the tutelage of Arthur Mendoza. He currently resides in Los Angeles.
