Hugo Pratt

Hugo Pratt, le créateur de « Corto Maltese », est né le 15 Juin 1927 à Rimini, mais il a passé toute son enfance à Venise au sein d’une famille cosmopolitaine. Son grand-père paternel, Joseph, est d’origine anglais, sa grand-mère maternelle est Juive, et sa grand-mère est d’origine turque.
Outre cette confluence d’ethnies, de croyances et de cultures qui se mélangent continuellement, sa mère, Evelina Genero, es fascinée par les sciences ésotériques, de la Kabale aux tarots, alors que son père, Rolando, est un homme de son temps, un militaire de carrière qui en 1936 a été affecté à la colonie italienne d’Abissinie. C’est ainsi que débute la jeune afriaine d’Hugo Pratt.
Il retourne en Italie à la mort de son père, en 1943 il rejoint le lycée militaire de Città di Castello. Grâce à sa bonne connaissance de l’anglais, en 1944 il devient interprète pour les Alliés avec qui il reste jusqu’à la fin de la guerre. In Venise, en 1945, Hugo Pratt prend part, au sein d’un groupe d’amis qui se donnent le nom de « Venetian group », à la création d’une bande dessinée l’Asso di Picche. Sa carrière de dessinateur de BD débute officiellement à ce moment. Grâce à ce magazine, le « Venetian group » sera contacté par un important éditeur Argentin : Hugo Pratt quitte l’Italie pour Buenos Aires en 1949 où il vivra approximativement trente ans. En Argentine il rencontre différents dessinateurs comme Salinas ou les frères Del Castillo, il sort dans les clubs où les gens dancent le tango, se lie d’amité avec le jazzman Dizzy Gillespie, apprend l’espagnol et découvre les écrivains Latino-Americains comme Octavio Paz, Leopoldo Lugones, Jorge Luis Borges et Roberto Arlt.

Hugo Pratt è nato il 15 giugno del 1927, a Rimini, ma ha vissuto tutta la sua infanzia a Venezia in un ambiente familiare cosmopolita. Il nonno paterno, Joseph, è di origini inglesi, mentre quello materno è un ebreo marrano, la nonna è di origine turca. In questo incontro di razze, di credenze e di culture che si mescolano in continuazione, la madre, Evelina Genero, è un’appassionata di scienze esoteriche, dalla cabala alla cartomanzia, mentre il padre, Rolando, è un uomo del suo tempo, un militare di carriera che nel 1936 viene trasferito nella colonia italiana dell’Abissinia. Inizia così per Hugo Pratt la giovinezza africana.
Tornato in Italia alla morte del padre, nel 1943 frequenta il collegio militare di Città di Castello e grazie alla buona padronanza della lingua inglese, nel 1944 diventa interprete dell’esercito alleato col quale rimane fino alla fine della guerra. A Venezia, nel 1945, Hugo Pratt partecipa, insieme con un gruppo di amici, alla realizzazione di una rivista di fumetti, l’Asso di Picche. In questo momento inizia ufficialmente la sua carriera di disegnatore. Sarà grazie a questa rivista che il’gruppo di Venezia’ verrà contattato da un’importante casa editrice argentina: Hugo Pratt parte così per Buenos Aires nel 1949 rimanendovi per circa tredici anni.
In Argentina incontra diversi disegnatori come Salinas o i fratelli Del Castillo, frequenta i locali dove si balla il tango, diventa amico del jazzista Dizzy Gillespie, impara lo spagnolo e scopre gli scrittori latino-americani, come Octavio Paz, Leopoldo Lugones, Jorge Luis Borges e Roberto Arlt.
Dall’estate 1959 a quella del 1960 Hugo Pratt vive a Londra, dove produce alcuni racconti di guerra mentre continua a frequentare la Royal Academy of Watercolour. Torna in Argentina, ma il periodo di austerità economica in cui versa il paese rendono difficoltoso anche il lavoro dei disegnatori di fumetti e Hugo Pratt decide di rientrare in Italia nel 1962.
Nel 1967 appaiono nove tavole di una nuova storia « Una ballata del mare salato » dove esordisce il personaggio di Corto Maltese.
Nel 1969, al V° Salone Internazionale di Lucca, Hugo Pratt conosce Georges Rieu, capo redattore del settimanale francese Pif che decide di pubblicarlo in Francia. Sul treno che da Genova lo porta a Parigi, Pratt decide, e sarà la svolta decisiva della sua carriera, di riutilizzare Corto.
Nell’aprile del’70, con l’episodio « Il segreto di Tristan Bantam », ricompare Corto Maltese. Questa lunga pubblicazione in un giornale ad alta tiratura sarà la vera base di partenza per la carriera di Hugo Pratt che, a partire dal 1971, verrà considerato dagli specialisti del settore come uno dei più importanti autori del mondo. Complessivamente la serie dedicata a Corto Maltese sarà di 29 storie.
Il successo di Corto Maltese in Francia, si propaga dapprima in Italia e poi in tanti altri paesi. Hugo Pratt trova nella Francia degli anni Settanta, un clima molto stimolante, lascia così Genova e si stabilisce a Parigi continuando però a viaggiare per il mondo e diventando lui stesso un vero « personaggio », al punto che Alberto Ongaro lo rende l’eroe di uno dei suoi romanzi e Milo Manara lo trasforma nel protagonista della serie « H.P. e Giuseppe Bergman ». Anche le reti televisive nazionali di molti paesi e la stessa RAI, gli dedicano intere trasmissioni e reportage sui luoghi descritti nelle sue storie.
La fantasia di Hugo Pratt è riuscita a lasciare il suo inconfondibile segno anche nei campi più disparati del mondo pubblicitario: da una vettura di Formula 1 con i colori delle sigarette Gitanes agli zaini Invicta, dallo spot della Carpené Malvolti alle carte telefoniche francesi. I suoi personaggi compaioni in vari manifesti cinematografici, sulle copertine dei dischi di cantanti come Paolo Conte e Lio. Mentre Hugo Pratt espone le sue opere in musei come il Grand Palais di Parigi e altre importanti sedi europee, Corto Maltese diventa il patrono di città o l’argomento di molte tesi di laurea. Mentre il ministro della cultura francese Jack Lang nomina Pratt « Cavaliere delle arti e delle lettere » e Mitterand regala le storie di Corto al pilota Jacques Lafitte, l’America cinematografica cita Corto Maltese in film come « Batman » di Tim Burton e « Hannah e le sue sorelle » di Woody Allen.
Hugo Pratt ha vissuto dal 1983 in Svizzera, nella sua casa di Grandvaux sul lago di Losanna, dove muore il 20 agosto 1995.

Hugo Pratt was born on June 15th 1927, in Rimini, but he spent his whole childhood in Venice in a cosmopolitan family setting. His paternal grandfather, Joseph, is of English origin, whereas his maternal grandfather is Jewish, and his grandmother is of Turkish origin. In this confluence of ethnicities, beliefs and cultures that continuously mix, his mother, Evelina Genero, is fascinated by the esoteric sciences, from cabala to tarot reading, while his father, Rolando, is a man of his time, a career soldier who in 1936 is transferred to the Italian colony of Abissinia. So begins Hugo Pratt’s African youth.
He returned to Italy when his father died, and in 1943 he attended the military college of Città di Castello. Thanks to his good knowledge of English, in 1944 he becomes an interpreter for the Allies with whom he remains until the end of the war. In Venice, in 1945, Hugo Pratt takes part, along with a group of friends aka the ?Venetian group’, in the creation of a comic book, l’Asso di Picche. His career as a cartoonist officially begins at this moment. Thanks to this magazine, the ?Venetian group’ will be contacted by an important Argentinean publisher: Hugo Pratt leaves Italy for Buenos Aires in 1949 where he will live for approximately thirteen years. In Argentina he meets various cartoonists like Salinas or the Del Castillo brothers, he goes to nightspots where people dance tango, befriends jazz player Dizzy Gillespie, learns Spanish and discovers Latin-American writers like Octavio Paz, Leopoldo Lugones, Jorge Luis Borges and Roberto Arlt.

From summer 1959 to summer 1960 Hugo Pratt lives in London, where he writes some tales of war while attending the Royal Academy of Watercolour. He goes back to Argentina, but the economical austerity enveloping the country at the time makes difficult even the work of cartoonists and Hugo Pratt decides to go back to Italy in 1962.

In 1967, nine storyboards of a new story « Una ballata del mare salato » appear where the character of Corto Maltese debuts.

In 1969, during the V° Salone Internazionale di Lucca, Hugo Pratt meets Georges Rieu, chief editor of the French weekly ?Pif’, who decides to publish « La Ballata’ in France. On the train from Geneva to Paris, Pratt decides to use Corto again, which will change his career forever.

In April 1970, with the episode « Il segreto di Tristan Bantam », Corto Maltese reappears. This long publication in a newspaper with high readership will be the real takeoff point of Hugo Pratt’s career. From 1971, he will be considered by the sector’s specialists as one of the world’s most important authors. Altogether, the series dedicated to Corto Maltese will contain 29 stories.

Corto Maltese’s success in France spreads first to Italy and then to many other countries. Hugo Pratt finds the France of the ?70s a very stimulating climate and for this reason he leaves Geneva to move to Paris. He continues to travel around the world and becomes a real « character » himself, to the point of being made the hero of one of Alberto Ongaro’s novels and the protagonist of Milo Manara’s series « H.P. e Giuseppe Bergman ». National television networks of many countries, and RAI itself, dedicated entire shows and reports on the places mentioned in his stories. Hugo Pratt’s imagination succeeded in leaving his unmistakable mark in the most disparate areas of the advertising world as well: from a Formula 1 car with the colors of the Gitanes cigarettes to the Invicta backpacks, from the ad of Carpené Malvolti to the French phone cards. His characters appear in various movie posters, on the covers of discs by singers like Paolo Conte, and Lio. While Hugo Pratt exhibits his works in museums like Paris’s Grand Palais and other important European venues, Corto Maltese becomes the patron of cities or the subject matter of many theses. While the French minister of culture Jack Lang names Pratt « knight of arts and letters » and French President Mitterand gave the stories about Corto to pilot Jacques Lafitte as a present, American cinematography cites Corto Maltese in movies such as Tim Burton’s « Batman » and Woody Allen’s « Hannah and her sisters ». Hugo Pratt lived in Grandvaux, Switzerland from 1983, on Leman lake, where he died on August 20th 1995.
