Bahaa Taher

Ecrivain et universitaire égyptien.

Bahaa Taher est né au Caire, Egypte. Il était actif dans les cercles littéraires de gauche dans son pays dans les années 60. Au milieu des années 70, il fut interdit de publication. Après de nombreuses années d’exil en Suisse [comme traducteur aux Nations-Unies, Genève], il est récemment retourné s’installer en Egypt. Devenu un des romanciers les plus lus du monde arabe, Taher a reçu de l’Etat la Médaille du Mérite en Littérature, la plus haute distinction officielle égyptienne pour un écrivain. Il est l’auteur de quatre recueils de nouvelles [dont certains adaptées au cinéma], plusieurs pièces de théâtre et des essais, ainsi que six romans : East of the Palms ; As Doha Said; Aunt Safiyya and the Monastery; Love in Exile; The Point of Light et Sunset Oasis [Oasis du couchant / Wâhat al-Ghouroub] qui a remporté le Prix International de la fiction arabe quand il fut décerné pour la première fois en 2008 par la Book Prize Foundation et il était nominé pour le Prix Indépendant de la Fiction Entrangère 2008 (Independent Foreign Fiction Prize).

Bahaa Taher was born in Cairo, Egypt. Shortly after graduating from the University of Cairo, he started work in Radio 2, the culture channel of the Egyptian Radio. In 1964, he published his first short story.
He was active in the country’s left-wing literary circles of the 1960s and was one of the writers of the Gallery 68 movement. A storyteller and social commentator Taher lost his job in radio broadcasting and was prevented from publishing in the mid 1970s in Sadat’s Egypt.

In 1981, he chose to leave for Geneva to work as a translator for the United Nations. After many years of exile in Switzerland, he has returned recently to Egypt and is very active in all cultural circles. He has received much recognition in the last five years. Apart from the translation into English of two of his novels, his collected works were published in Cairo by Dar al Hilal in 1992, and a film was made about him as a leading member of the 60s generation by Jamil’At iyyat lbrahim in 1995.

Quickly becoming one of the most widely read contemporary novelists in the Arab world, Taher has received in 1998 the State’s Award of Merit in Literature, the highest honour the Egyptian establishment can confer on a writer.

In 2000 he was awarded the prestigious Italian Guiseppe Acerbi prize for his widely acclaimed novel Khalti Safiya wal Dier (My Aunt Safiya and the Monastery).
He is the author of four collections of short stories, several plays and works of non-fiction, and six novels: East of the Palms; As Doha Said; Aunt Safiyya and the Monastery; Love in Exile; The Point of Light and Sunset Oasis [Oasis du couchant / Wâhat al-Ghouroub], which won the Book Prize Foundation’s inaugural International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2008 and was longlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize 2008.

Baha Tahir (f. 1935 i Kairo) levde i eksil i nærmere 20 år fordi han fikk forbud mot å skrive og publisere på grunn av sin radikale og opposisjonelle virksomhet. Han reiste i Asia og Afrika før han slo seg ned i Sveits. Her arbeidet han som oversetter for FN inntil han returnerte til Egypt i 1995.

Der solen går ned er hans sjette roman. Han har også skrevet flere novellesamlinger, skuespill og andre tekster. Kjærlighet i eksil kom på norsk i 2008.
