Dave Smith was born in Derbyshire, England in 1944. He studied at Derby College of Art, initially taking commercial design courses before specializing in painting and subsequently becoming a Post Graduate Fine Arts student at Hornsey College of Art in London.
During the following years, he supported himself part-time teaching in art schools, until in 1969 he formed the London - based Electric Colour Company with artists ANDREW GREAVES, JEFFREY PINE & RODERIC STOKES. Together they collaborated on design projects such as signage, murals, commercial and domestic interiors, custom-car finishes, custom furniture and fashion accessories. Work from this period appeared in the U.K magazines: Time Out, Vogue, Design, Hot Car & the Sunday Times Magazine as well as Los Angeles Times West Magazine.
