Marie-Hélène Gutberlet

Marie-Hélène Gutberlet a grandi en Allemagne, au Bénin et en Suisse. Elle a fait des études d’Histoire de l’Art, Philosophie et Cinéma à l’Université Frankfurt/Main. En 2004, elle a publié sa thèse  » Auf Reisen, Afrikanisches Kino  » (Cinéma africain en route), sur les aspects interculturels et trans-locaux de la perception dans le cinéma africain. Elle est co-fondatrice de la série de films expérimentaux Reel to real, Frankfurt/Main 2003-2013 (http://www.reeltoreal.de/index.html) et co-commissaire du projet Visionary Archive, Berlin, Bissau, Johannesburg, Khartoum. Elle travaille en tant qu’auteure, éditrice, et commissaire indépendante depuis 2012. De 2013 à 2015, Gutberlet a été, avec Tobias Hering, directrice artistique du projet d’archives cinématographiques Visionary Archive, avec des étapes publiques à Berlin, Bissau/Guinée-Bissau, Johannesburg, Le Caire/Égypte et Khartoum/Soudan. En outre, elle a co-initié en 2017 le festival Cours, cours, camarade, le vieux Monde est derrière toi – The Cinema of Med Hondo à Berlin et est co-éditrice de la publication en deux volumes. Depuis 2017, elle développe avec Annett Busch le projet Women on Aeroplanes avec des étapes à Berlin, Lagos/Nigeria, Bayreuth/Allemagne, Londres/Grande-Bretagne, Varsovie/Pologne et Francfort-sur-le-Main. Différents formats y voient le jour, qui abordent le déséquilibre entre l’engagement et la visibilité des femmes dans les mouvements d’indépendance africains – non pas pour mettre en avant des performances individuelles, mais par intérêt pour les processus, les méthodes et les économies d’une longue histoire de pratiques transcontinentales et transculturelles.

Marie-Hélène Gutberlet grew up in Germany, Benin and Switzerland. She graduated in history of art, philosophy and film studies at the Frankfurt University. In 2004, she published her dissertation, Auf Reisen, Afrikanisches Kino (African Cinema on the Road), which focuses on intercultural aspects of perception in African cinemas. She has largely published on, organised conferences about and programmed African and black cinema, and experimental and documentary film. Gutberlet was artistic director of the film archival project Visionary Archive together with Tobias Hering from 2013-2015, with public stations in Berlin, Bissau/Guinea-Bissau, Johannesburg, Cairo/Egypt and Khartoum/Sudan. Furthermore, in 2017 she co-initiated the festival Cours, cours, camarade, le vieux Monde est derrière toi – The Cinema of Med Hondo in Berlin and is co-editor of the forthcoming two-volume publication. Since 2017, she has been developing the project Women on Aeroplanes with Annett Busch, with stops in Berlin, Lagos/Nigeria, Bayreuth/Germany, London/UK, Warsaw/Poland and Frankfurt am Main. Here, different formats emerge that address the disproportion of engagement and visibility of women in African independence movements – not to highlight individual achievements, but out of interest for the processes, methods and economies of a long history of transcontinental, transcultural practice.
