Born Latoya Alicia Jackson to parents, Elizabeth Pauline Gray and Bryan Jackson, she grew up in the Washington Gardens area of St. Andrew. She attended Mavisville Prep and Edith Dalton James Comprehensive High before going to the H.E.A.R.T Trust NTA to complete a culinary course.
After leaving H.E.A.R.T., she landed a job as a chef at the Jamaica Pegasus. She got accepted in the Miami Culinary Arts Institute, but was unable to attend because of financial difficulties. Even while holding down a full-time job, Toya was an avid party-girl.
Because of her brash sense of fashion and unpredictability, she soon became a popular figure at popular sessions such as Wet Wet, Black and White as well as Miami Link Up parties. After hooking up with Josef Bogdanovich, the chief executive officer of Down Sound Records, she recorded her first song, the pop-influenced Too Sexy in 2007, but it wasn't until she did Hot Like a Fire last year that she began to raise eyebrows in dancehall circles.
Armed with a new video to promote her single, Toya has been doing a blizzard of interviews to raise her profile in the local market.
"The video is going to wow a lot of people, we really tried to be avante-garde and edgy with it and I like the final result," Toya said.
