Starting with Replica his breakthrough script originally written as a feature, Mukwaya has just recently accomplished to a high school drama series amongst his numerous scripts.

Born to Abdullah Muhammad Mukwaya and Mariam Azidah, Usama is the second and third born of his family and currently leaves in the capital, Kampala. In 2000 at only 12 when Usama stood out from the many pupils of Linnet Primary School and emerged the best performer in the parents’ day activities.

This established a strong go ahead in all his following performing arts activities including an exhibition participation in the first Banana fiber contemporary mosaics 2009, Makerere University Art department with celebrated artist, Felix Lubega. Early 2010, Usama joined Maryland Productions Africa from where he had his first acting role in ‘Pain of lies’ though it hasn’t been released till to date. He later went on and joined Uganda Film Network as a screenwriter and there he was appointed the general secretary in the screenwriters’ guild. Later that very year he was accepted in MFAPAC. He is also one of the first alumni the Mariam Ndagire Film and Performing Arts Centre.

In December 2010 a collaboration of Trendz studios, Maisha Film Lab and Makerere Business School Usama successful made his first short movie, ‘Hello’. He also achieved a nomination in the 2010 Mariam Ndagire Film and Performing Arts students’ film awards for the best screenplay and in the same year he had a chance to showcase ‘Hello’ in the inaugural Pearl International Film Festival.

In 2011, Usama was blessed with an invite to participate in the 7th annual Maisha filmmaker’s lab that saw him stroke shoulders with terrific filmmakers like Moon-soon Wedding’s Mira Nair – the founder, Slum dog Millionaire’s Mrinal Desai, Storm Chaser’s Jeff Wynne, The Bachelors’ Steven Cohen and many more proficient filmmakers. That finished with a collaboration with Diana Karua in the making of ‘She likes Prada’.

He later on won the Young Achievers Award in film and Television 2011, an initiative designed to create a platform for harnessing talent, show case excellence and innovation among Ugandan citizens aged between 18 and 35 years, and equally inspire others to get involved and pursue their dreams. Still under Mfapac, In 2012 Usama debuted his directory role with his short film Smart Attempt that was followed on with ‘In Just Hours’ which won him best short film in the movie furnace 2013.

In addition to his latest inventive accomplishments, Mukwaya has recently worked on movie projects like BALA BALA SESE (2015) a feature film he is teaming up with one of Ugandan’s finest video directors, Lukyamuzi Bashir and Phy-chic with Jamo Production. He has contributed as well to African Woman magazine before being the chairman writer’s club in his former high school.

Usama has also worked as the treasurer Screenwriters Guild (Uganda Film Network), editor with UM Magazine and recently the general secretary Pearl International Film Festival. with more than five successful movie projects and more in production, Usama is continuously determined to be one of the youngest successful filmmakers in Uganda.


BIO (as Producer / screenwriter)
Usama starting his writing career as a child. In 2010, he joined Dan Kiggundu’s Maryland Productions where he debuted as a script editor and supporting actor in the TV drama ‘Pain of lies’ that premiered in 2011. He later Joined Mariam Ndagire Film and Performing Arts Center where he did his first short film, Hello that won the overall best film in the MNFPAC awards 2010. In July 2011, he then made it to the final selection of the 12 screenwriters from all over East Africa to participate in the seventh Maisha film lab ending up with collaboration with Diana Karua in the making of the movie ‘She Likes Prada’.

In 2011, Usama won the Young achievers award in the film and television category, the youngest among the winners to win the award in the newly introduced category alongside Rwandan president Paul Kagame, who won the Lifetime achievement award. Amidst other four young directors in August 2012, he directed his first film, Smart Attempt written by Julian Nabunya and Abel Mwesigwa during the Movie Furnace project. He has worked as a General Secretary and Treasurer Screenwriter’s guild of Uganda Film Network and twice as General Secretary Pearl International Film Festival. Usama recently directed a silent short ‘Tiktok’ scheduled to be released in 2015 and has announced his directory debut with his upcoming movie, ‘Love Faces’ staring Joel Okuyo.
