Kytao né le 22 avril 1981 à Casablanca au Maroc, est un artiste multi-talents, photographe, DJ et réalisateur franco-marocain, fondateur du label French Cut™ basé à Paris.
Il fut l’un des premiers mannequins d’origine maghrébine à défiler pour les grandes marques et dans les magazines. Retiré des podiums, celui qui a choisi le pseudo de Kytao, fait rejaillir le beau dans ses photos et films au sein de sa structure French Cut.
Franco-marocain, Kytao nait en avril 1981 à Casablanca. Il suit alors son père sportif et s’installe à Stalingrad dans le 19ème arrondissement de Paris. Après un passage par le sud de la France, il commence à l’âge de 16 ans la danse hip hop au sein du Vagabond Crew. « J’avais un ami, un grand frère Mohamed Belarbi qui m’a mis dedans. J’ai suivi le mouvement. Je ne suis pas particulièrement à fond dans la danse mais je me retrouve au sein du groupe des meilleurs danseurs de l’époque. »
Après un bac économique et social, il démarre des études de psychologie, « pour faire bien« . En parallèle de ses études, le jeune homme ne tient pas en place. Ayant déjà la verve et le goût de l’image, il se lance dans l’écriture de scénarios et même d’un manga en 1999. « J’aime l’univers, l’histoire médiévale et les codes japonais, indique l’artiste. Plus jeune, nous étions attirés par les dessins animés du Club Dorothée (Cobra, les Chevaliers du Zodiaque, etc.). J’ai inventé le mien. Par l’intermédiaire d’un ami dessinateur, je l’ai fait publier, en toute humilité, par une maison d’édition japonaise sous le nom de Kytao. Le personnage est né à ce moment-là. C’est devenu ensuite mon pseudo quand j’ai commencé la photo et la réalisation. »
Avec ce livre publié, il voit alors les choses différemment et se sent pousser des ailes. Il peut alors compter sur son talent et sa débrouillardise pour aller de l’avant. « Je ne me voyais pas forcément continuer dans le manga. Ce que j’aimais, c’était observer le comportement humain et raconter des histoires. Peu importe la forme d’expression, je voulais laisser libre cours à mon imagination. »
Autodidacte, il apprend l’image, l’écriture de scénarios et la réalisation. Alors qu’il est danseur, il participe à des spectacles et quelques clips. Des photographes de plateau lui proposent des photos pour un magazine. Par l’entremise de Sofia Boutella, il commence sa carrière de mannequin. Egérie Yamamoto pendant deux ans, on peut le voir chez Benetton, Marithé&François Girbaud, Dior, Vogue, GQ, etc… « Je sais que ce n’est pas moi. Sans le faire à contre-coeur, je gagne de l’argent. Mais ce n’est qu’une étape pour moi. J’y ai appris l’esthétisme, le stylisme, l’utilisation du corps, de la lumière,… C’était pour moi un jalon pour la suite. »
Son look plaît. On peut le voir sur les bus et métros d’autant qu’il est le premier maghrébin à être mis en avant dans cet univers peu coloré à l’époque. »Je suis le seul mannequin à faire un peu métis. J’avais une coupe un peu afro. Depuis, j’ai décidé de couper avec cette image. Mon envie de porter un masque vient du fait que je privilégie le travail à la personne. J’ai toujours été quelqu’un de discret. »
Son bout de chemin dans la mode lui a fait rencontrer des grands noms de la photographie. « J’observais que plus ils étaient côtés, plus ça avait l’air facile. Ils avaient non seulement la maîtrise technique mais aussi une vision. C’était la voie qui m’intéressait. Je fais partie d’une génération qui est passé de la DV à la 4K, de l’argentique au numérique. C’est plus simple aujourd’hui et plus accessible. »
A partir d’un collectif artistique, il fonde une agence de talent et de communication, de production musicale et de développement d’images. French Cut est né. » J’ai senti très vite que l’image serait au coeur de notre société. Même si j’étais solitaire dans mon aventure de mannequinat, on ne peut pas faire du bon travail seul. Sinon, on fait des natures mortes ! Il n’y a pas de règles pour comprendre l’esthétisme. Certaines oeuvres traversent le temps et à force de cultiver son oeil, on prend acte de la puissance artistique. Le beau n’est que de l’émotion ! »
Passionné de sports de combat (grappling, boxe thaï,..), il apprend la rigueur, la persévérance et le dépassement de soi. Avec une volonté sans cesse de se renouveler, il se met à l’ombre petit à petit et s’oriente vers la réalisation de clips musicaux et de courts métrages en 2001. Attiré par les concepts vidéo, Kytao devient une référence dans le métier avec des grands noms du hip hop (L’Artiste, Diams, Lil Wayne, Mohombi, etc..). Après 20 ans de carrière, il vient d’atteindre son 300ème clip !
Très attaché à son pays d’origine, Kytao retourne souvent à Casablanca. « C’est l’une des villes où je me sens le mieux dans le monde. Je suis moi-même dans la ville comme dans ses bidonvilles. Elle a une âme comme Istanbul, Tokyo ou Los Angeles. J’aime le coté nocturne et les villes qui vivent la nuit. Le coté un peu sombre m’interpelle. Le clair/obscur cache d’infinies possibilités. » Toujours en quête de nouveaux projets pour le Royaume, une structure French Cut devrait ouvrir prochainement à Marrakech pour accueillir des nouvelles opportunités.
Toujours en quête d’un nouveau défi, il se concentre sur son sujet du moment : les gens passionnés par le cosplay. Une activité incroyable qui consiste à se déguiser en super-héros. « J’ai découvert cet univers au Japon où je vais régulièrement. Je voulais comprendre quels types de personnes allaient faire la démarche d’intégrer cet univers de manga et de super héros. C’est énormément pratiqué en France. Ils fabriquent leurs propres costumes, les personnalisent et vont jusqu’à incarner le personnage dans du « rôle play ». Il n’y a pas de catégorie particulière derrière cette passion. Ils prennent du plaisir à le faire et à s’exprimer ainsi. En conclusion, ils s’évadent du quotidien. » Ce livre portera le nom de "Heroes" et sort en novembre 2023.
Perfectionniste, 80% de son travail part aux oubliettes. Son envie : que ce soit marquant, percutant ou subtil. « Je suis en perpétuelle construction. Je ne cherche pas à m’exprimer ou à avoir du succès. Ma référence est interne. Le chemin est tellement long si je veux arriver à mon objectif. Mon besoin est de faire du beau intemporel ! »

He was one of the first models of North African origin to parade for major brands and in magazines. Retired from the podiums, the one who chose the nickname Kytao, brings out beauty in his photos and films within his French Cut structure.
Franco-Moroccan, Kytao was born in April 1981 in Casablanca. He then followed his sportsman father and settled in Stalingrad in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. After a stint in the south of France, he began hip hop dancing at the age of 16 within the Vagabond Crew. “I had a friend, a big brother Mohamed Belarbi who got me into it. I followed the movement. I'm not particularly into dancing but I find myself among the group of the best dancers of the time. »
After an economic and social baccalaureate, he began studying psychology, “to do well”. At the same time as his studies, the young man cannot sit still. Already having the verve and the taste for the image, he started writing screenplays and even a manga in 1999. “I love the universe, medieval history and Japanese codes,” says the artist. When we were younger, we were attracted to Club Dorothée cartoons (Cobra, Knights of the Zodiac, etc.). I invented my own. Through a designer friend, I had it published, in all humility, by a Japanese publishing house under the name Kytao. The character was born at that moment. It then became my nickname when I started photography and directing. »
With this book published, he sees things differently and feels himself growing wings. He can then count on his talent and resourcefulness to move forward. “I didn’t necessarily see myself continuing in the manga. What I loved was observing human behavior and telling stories. Regardless of the form of expression, I wanted to give free rein to my imagination. »
Self-taught, he learned images, screenwriting and directing. While he is a dancer, he participates in shows and some music videos. Still photographers offer him photos for a magazine. Through Sofia Boutella, he began his career as a model. Yamamoto’s muse for two years, we can see him at Benetton, Marithé&François Girbaud, Dior, Vogue, GQ, etc… “I know it’s not me. Without doing it reluctantly, I earn money. But this is just a step for me. There I learned aesthetics, styling, the use of the body, light, etc. It was for me a milestone for the future. »
His look pleases. We can see him on buses and metros, especially since he is the first North African to be highlighted in this not very colorful world at the time. »I am the only model who looks a little mixed race. I had a bit of an afro cut. Since then, I have decided to make a break with this image. My desire to wear a mask comes from the fact that I prioritize work over people. I have always been a discreet person. »
His journey in fashion introduced him to big names in photography. “I observed that the more sided they were, the easier it seemed. They not only had technical mastery but also vision. This was the path that interested me. I am part of a generation that went from DV to 4K, from film to digital. It’s simpler today and more accessible. »
From an artistic collective, he founded a talent and communication agency, musical production and image development. French Cut was born. » I felt very quickly that image would be at the heart of our society. Even though I was lonely in my modeling journey, you can't do good work alone. Otherwise, we make still lifes! There are no rules for understanding aesthetics. Certain works stand the test of time and by cultivating one's eye, one becomes aware of the artistic power. I wanted to understand what types of people were going to take the step of integrating this world of manga and superheroes. It is widely practiced in France. They make their own costumes, personalize them and even play the character in “role play”. There is no particular category behind this passion. They take pleasure in doing it and expressing themselves in this way. In conclusion, they escape from everyday life. » This book will be called “Heroes” and will be released in November 2023.
