Jamil DEHLAVI est un réalisateur producteur et scénariste britannique. Il est né à Calcutta (Inde) d’un père pakistanais et d’une mère française.

D’origine franco-pakistanaise, Jamil Dehlavi est issu d’une famille de diplomates qui lui a permis de voyager toute son enfance entre l’Europe et l’Asie avant d’entrer à Oxford. Après de brillantes études de Droit, il devient Avocat à la Cour de Londres – profession à laquelle il préfère rapidement le métier du cinéma.

Il entre alors à la Columbia University School of the Arts de New York, où il réalise son premier long métrage TOWERS OF SILENCE. Ce premier film, présenté lors de nombreux festivals internationaux, obtient le Grand Prix du Festival des Amériques. Dehlavi en est à la fois le scénariste, le producteur et le réalisateur, trois métiers qu’il exercera souvent simultanément pour la plupart de ses films.

Son projet suivant est un essai fictif et controversé sur la tyrannie, intitulé THE BLOOD OF HUSSAIN: l’histoire d’une dictature militaire et du mouvement révolutionnaire qui la menace. Tourné sur place, ce film retrace le martyre d’un petit-fils du prophète Mahomet dans le Pakistan moderne. Le film prémonitoire, terminé seulement quelques jours avant la prise de pouvoir par le Général Zia vaut à Dehlavi l’expulsion de son pays suivi d’un exil forcé de dix ans. Sélectionné pour la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs à Cannes, il remporte le Grand Prix du Festival de Taormina.

Produit à Londres et tourné en Turquie, son film suivant BORN OF FIRE est un thriller fantastique qui met en scène les acteurs Peter Firth et Suzan Crowley. Il attire de nouveau l’attention des festivals internationaux, entre dans la sélection officielle du Festival d’Avoriaz et remporte des prix à Madrid et Houston.

C’est sous le gouvernement de Benazir Bhutto que Dehlavi retourne au Pakistan pour tourner IMMACULATE CONCEPTION avec James Wilby, Melissa Leo, Shabana Azmi et Zia Mohyeddin. Ce film met en scène l’histoire d’un couple anglo-américain stérile que la décision de faire appel à un grand Prêtre de la stérilité à Karachi entraîne dans un destin tragique. Le tournage doit surmonter d’importantes difficultés dès le début de la Guerre du Golfe à un moment où l’hostilité envers les occidentaux est à son comble. Malgré les nombreux problèmes politiques, le film est un véritable succès, distingué par le Prix Spécial du Jury du Festival de Dinard et sélectionné pour le Panorama de Berlin.

En 1994, Dehlavi produit PASSION IN THE DESERT, mis en scène par la réalisatrice américaine Lavinia Currier. Basé sur une nouvelle de Balzac qui raconte l’histoire d’un soldat français perdu dans le désert égyptien et de l’amitié qu’il va lier avec un léopard sauvage, le film est tourné en Jordanie avec les acteurs Michel Piccoli et Ben Daniels.

En 1998, Dehlavi écrit, produit et réalise JINNAH, avec Christopher Lee, James Fox, Maria Altken et Shashi Kapoor, un film épique qui raconte l’histoire dramatique de la partition de l’Inde et la fondation du Pakistan. Il reçoit la Médaille d’Or pour Meilleur Film Etranger au Flagstaff Worldfest, la Médaille d’Argent à Houston, le Grand Prix du Festival International de Zanzibar, et le film est nominé au Festival International du Caire pour une Pyramide d’Or

Dehlavi, qui parle cinq langues, a simultanément réalisé plusieurs projets pour la BBC, Channel Four et la Télévision française: QÂF – LA MONTAGNE SACRÉE, l’hommage à un volcan lauréat de 5 Prix Internationaux des festivals de l’Environnement; PASSOVER, un mystère de la Passion tourné à Cordoue et réalisé en collaboration avec le célèbre guitariste de Flamenco Paco Peña; et The Guitarist, qui a remporté une Médaille d’Or au Festival d’Atlanta et une Médaille d’Argent à Cannes. Il a également collaboré à la Division des Services Radio et Télévision des Nations Unies.

Son film INFINITE JUSTICE avec Kevin Collins et Raza Jaffrey relate l’histoire d’un journaliste d’investigation juif américain pris en otage à Karachi par des musulmans intégristes en échange de la libération de prisonniers de Guantanamo. Le film a déjà reçu le Prix du Meilleur Film au Festival Indépendent du Film Européen en France, le Prix « Robert Rodriguez » pour excellence au Festival DV d’Hollywood, le Prix de la Critique au Festival International d’Amiens, le Prix du Public au River to River Festival de Florence, le Prix Spécial du Jury à Worldfest Houston, le Prix Fipresci de la Critique Internationale au Festival International de Zanzibar, et le Prix de la meilleure interprétation au Karafilm Festival au Pakistan.

Dehlavi a terminé en 2009 son nouveau projet GODFORSAKEN, un film fantastique qui raconte l’histoire d’un ange déchu qui lutte pour sa rédemption. Ce film, tourné en Angleterre, est interprété par Annabel Wright, Trevor White et Nick Ashdon. La première Mondiale a eu lieu au Festival de Zanzibar (ZIFF 2009).

Jamil DEHLAVI is British film writer/director/producer. He was born in Calcutta, India to an Pakistani father and French mother.
Jamil Dehlavi is an independent filmmaker of Pakistani and French origin. His father was a diplomat, so the family travelled extensively between Asia and Europe before he obtained a place at Oxford. After graduating in law, he qualified as a barrister but never practised preferring instead to go into the world of cinema.

Dehlavi studied film direction at Columbia University in New York and while based there made his first feature film TOWERS OF SILENCE. The film was shown at numerous international festivals and won the Grand Prize at the Festival of the Americas. Dehlavi wrote, produced and directed it, a practice he has continued with most of his work to date.

His next film was an abstract essay on tyranny the controversial THE BLOOD OF HUSSAIN, a fictional account of a military dictatorship and the revolutionary movement against it. Shot on location in Pakistan, Dehlavi recast the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson in the context of modern Pakistan. The film was finished a fortnight before General Zia came to power and for that sin of political clairvoyance, he was forced to leave his country and live in exile. The film was selected for the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes and won the Grand Prize at the Taormina film festival.

Based in England his next feature film was BORN OF FIRE, a supernatural thriller shot in Turkey starring Peter Firth and Suzan Crowley. It was another festival favourite and won prizes at Madrid, Houston and Avoriaz.

Under Benazir Bhutto’s government Dehlavi returned to Pakistan to film IMMACULATE CONCEPTION starring James Wilby, Melissa Leo, Shabana Azmi and Zia Mohyeddin. It is the story of a childless American-English couple who visit a fertility shrine in Karachi with devastating results. The shoot was not without its own difficulties as the Gulf War had just begun and anti-Western feeling was at its height. Despite the political problems, the film was completed successfully and went on to win the Special Jury Prize at the Dinard Film Festival and was selected for Panorama in Berlin.

In 1994 Dehlavi then produced PASSION IN THE DESERT for American director Lavinia Currier. Shot on location in Jordan the film stars Michel Piccoli and Ben Daniels and is based on a Balzac short story set during the Napoleonic Wars which relates the adventures of a French soldier lost in the desert in Egypt and the friendship he develops with a wild leopard.

Dehlavi’s next feature film project was JINNAH which he wrote, produced and directed in 1998. Starring Christopher Lee, James Fox, Maria Aitken and Shashi Kapoor, it is a historical epic which tells the dramatic story of the partition of India and the founding of Pakistan. It received the Gold Award at Worldfest Flagstaff for Best Foreign Film, a Silver Award at Houston, the Grand Prize at the Zanzibar International Film Festival and was nominated for a Golden Pyramid at the Cairo International Film Festival.

Dehlavi, who is fluent in five languages, has also worked on various projects for the BBC, Channel Four, and French Television including QÂF – THE SACRED MOUNTAIN a homage to a volcano which won five international awards at environmental film festivals, PASSOVER a passion play shot in Cordoba made in collaboration with the celebrated flamenco guitarist Paco Peña, and THE GUITARIST which won a Gold Medal at the Atlanta Film Festival and a Silver Medal at Cannes. He has also worked in the Radio & Visual Services Division at the United Nations.

Dehlavi’s last feature film INFINITE JUSTICE starring Kevin Collins and Raza Jaffrey is the story of a Jewish American journalist who is held for ransom by Muslim fundamentalists against the release of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. The film has already received the Best European Feature Film Award at the European Independent Film Festival in France, the Robert Rodriguez Prize for Excellence at the Hollywood DV Festival, the Critic’s Prize at the Amiens International Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Florence River to River Festival, the Special Jury Award at Worldfest Houston, the Fipresci International Critics Prize at the Zanzibar International Film Festival, and the Best Supporting Actor Award at the KaraFilm Festival in Pakistan.

Dehlavi has just completed his current project, GODFORSAKEN, a supernatural thriller about a fallen angel seeking redemption for the death of a child under his protection. Shot on location in England, the film stars Annabel Wright, Trevor White and Nick Ashdon.
