Yo-Yo Gonthier

Yo-Yo Gonthier est né à Niamey, Niger, en 1974. Il a obtenu en 1997 une Maîtrise de Sciences et Techniques en Photographie à Paris 8. Il travaille depuis comme photographe plasticien indépendant. Il questionne actuellement l’effacement de la mémoire dans une société occidentale où la vitesse, le progrès et la technologie semblent être les valeurs essentielles. Sa démarche plastique s’articule autour du surgissement du merveilleux à travers une interprétation particulière de la nuit et du clair obscur. Son travail d’investigation nocturne a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs parutions et notamment dans l’ouvrage intitulé Les lanternes sourdes en 2004. Par ailleurs, il s?intéresse aux vestiges de l’Empire colonial français et aux frottements entre Histoire et mémoires. Une première étape du projet OUTRE-MER a été présentée à l’espace Khiasma, aux Lilas, en juin 2008. Yo-Yo Gonthier est également familier des interventions multimédia qu’il mène en milieu scolaire, mais qui l?ont aussi conduit à s’exprimer en milieu hospitalier, comme à l’hôpital de jour Robert Balanger, à Aulnay-Sous-Bois. Dans le cadre du projet La peau de la lune sur la thématique de l’envol, il est actuellement en résidence de création au collège St Exupery à Rosny-Sous-Bois dans le programme In Situ initié par le Conseil Général de Seine-Saint-Denis. Il vient de terminer une commande photographique sur le monde créole pour le Parc de la Villette dans le cadre de l’exposition Kréyol Factory qui a eu lieu en avril 2OO9 et participe en ce moment à la Biennale africaine de la photographie, à Bamako, au Mali.

Yo-Yo Gonthier was born in Niamey, Niger, in 1974. He graduated with a Masters in Photography and Multimedia from Paris VIII University in 1997 and has since been working as a freelance photographer, primarily based in Paris. The object of his work is the erasure of memory in a western world where the essential values seem to be speed, progress and technology. He seeks the sense of wonder, in a tension between attraction and repulsion, bringing his own interpretation to night-time photography and the use of light and dark/chiaroscuro. His nocturnal studies have already provided the material for several exhibitions, including Les lanternes sourdes, a study of shuttered dark lanterns, in 2004. He is also interested in the remnants of France’s colonial past, investigating the friction between history and memory. This ongoing project already gave rise to a preliminary exhibition entitled Outre-mer at the Espace Khiasma, Paris, in June 2008. Yo-Yo Gonthier is also involved in a number of multimedia workshops, both in schools and hospitals. He is currently artist in residence at St Exupery middle school near Paris, working on the La Peau de la lune project on the theme of fligh. He recently completed a commission for the Parc de la Villette, Paris for the 2009 Kréyol Factory exhibition and currently participates in the Biennial of African Photography, in Bamako, Mali.
