Uganda Women Writers Association was founded in 1995 by a group of women led by Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut and it was officially launched on 3rd May 1996 to form a community of empowered women writers. Formation of this organisation was mainly driven by the need to create intimate space for women writers to be able to write more, to inspire and encourage each other and to find opportunities to publish their works. Since inception, the organisation has made major strides in impacting Uganda’s and Africa’s literary landscape. Femrite is a membership organisation with over 100 members, some of whom have had major literary achievements.

The organisation major activities and programs include a writers’ centre which is open to both men and women, a regional residency for African women writers, creative writing workshops, publishing fiction and nonfiction, Uganda writers and book caravan, readers and Writers clubs, lobbying and advocacy activities, capacity building events, Reading tents, and much more.
