About

THIRTEEN is one of America’s most respected and innovative public media providers. A member of the WNET.ORG family of companies, THIRTEEN is a unique cultural and educational institution that harnesses the power of television and electronic media to inform, enlighten, entertain and inspire.

The flagship public television station of the New York City tri-state area and the most-watched public television channel in the nation, THIRTEEN reaches millions of people with programming that celebrates arts and culture, offers insightful commentary on the affairs of the day, explores the worlds of science and nature, and invites young people to have fun while learning.

THIRTEEN’s broadcast schedule features a dynamic mix of programming, much of it created in THIRTEEN’s own studios, including: Reel 13, an on-air, online cinema series, and SundayArts, a weekly showcase for the city’s cultural offerings.

In addition, THIRTEEN’s daily schedule features acclaimed PBS series such as Nature, American Masters, Great Performances, Frontline, NOVA, Masterpiece, American Experience and Antiques Roadshow, as well as such beloved kids’ programming as Sesame Street, Arthur, and Cyberchase.

Many of the series and specials that comprise the PBS national schedule are created by THIRTEEN’s production arm. Along with Nature, American Masters, Great Performances, and Cyberchase, THIRTEEN’s signature PBS series include Blueprint America, Wide Angle, Secrets of the Dead, Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, NOW on PBS, Bill Moyers Journal, and Exposé. THIRTEEN is also renowned for originating such landmark PBS miniseries and specials as Broadway: The American Musical, Slavery and the Making of America, Colonial House, Simon Schama’s Power of Art, African American Lives, Make ‘Em Laugh, and The Ascent of Money.

THIRTEEN and sister station WLIW21 have launched a range of additional channels that enhance the reach and relevance of public television: ThirteenHD provides stunning high-definition quality; Thirteen Kids carries the shows that kids love and parents trust; WLIW Create offers popular cooking, travel, gardening, and « how-to » programs; WLIW World presents acclaimed documentaries and public affairs programs. Thirteen On Demand and Thirteen Kids On Demand give viewers the opportunity to watch their favorite programs on their own schedules. And V-me is the first public television network in Spanish.

These broadcast and cable services are joined by Thirteen.org, an exciting online destination, where the public can explore public television content in new ways, viewing streaming video, as well as exclusive online series, lectures and other features.

As part of its mission to use media to create lifelong learning opportunities, THIRTEEN’s Education wing reaches out to millions of educators and students every year with online initiatives, publications and outreach. Every spring, THIRTEEN and WLIW21 hold the Celebration of Teaching and Learning, the largest professional development conference of its kind.

All of this work is made possible by the community of partners and supporters that keep THIRTEEN independent and vital. The largest membership organization in the New York area, THIRTEEN receives annual contributions from hundreds of thousands of members. National and local corporations and foundations provide general support and underwriting for specific programs and projects. Major philanthropic donations from individuals are another key source of funds. And a small portion of funding comes annually from government agencies. THIRTEEN also benefits from the WNET.ORG endowment, which helps provide a stable source of revenue in times of need.

With its unique approach to the television medium, award-winning productions and presentations, groundbreaking educational services, and a program schedule that sets it apart from all other television outlets, THIRTEEN creates a dynamic and revered place in the media landscape – a place known and respected for its uncompromising commitment to intelligence, integrity, innovation, and inspiration.
