Barney Platts Mills, the only filmmaker to receive unanimous invitation to Cannes critics week is back after 27 years, with the first ever Moroccan dialect film.
A past master of the Neo- Realist movement, the critically acclaimed film director Barney Platts-Mills (Bronco Bullfrog, Private Road) is back on form after a 27 year break, depicting the exotic, and contemporary world of rural Morocco with an honesty and beauty that gives the viewer a rare glimpse into this hidden world.
Platts-Mills was inspired by the idea of Rosellini who as he understood it « proposed that one take a neighbourhood and make a film to represent or reflect that place by using the stories that emerged from the peoples experiences and getting the people to act them out in their natural locations. » This is the idea he used in « Bronco Bullfrog », and which he has again used in the making of « Zohra », having lived in Mejlaou (the location of the film) since 2001.
« ZOHRA » is a simple love story set against the social and economic realities of life in rural Morocco, about two lovers, ZOHRA, a fourteen year old village girl pressured to marry an older wealthier man, and IBRAHIM whom she meets while he is hiding in the village waiting to take a boat to Spain. Stormy weather delays the voyage and the young people share a fugitive love affair, dreaming of running away together before reality intrudes. Reminiscent of Platts- Mills earlier work, it examines the conflict between the older generations idealism, willingness to dream, and questioning of the existing system. Drawing on the beautiful, rich and generous Moroccan landscape Platts- Mills invites the audience to question the immigration of people from such a bountiful land. He states that only the obscenities of international politics could have made it inhospitable to its people. Platts Mills raises questions without lecturing, merely depicting reality in the form of a Moroccan fairytale.
IBRAHIM is the water sprite who wants to escape through the ocean to faraway places, while ZOHRA is earth rooted to her land and people.
