Une femme voyage dans le Maroc, sur les traces d’une présence juive qui fut importante au fil des siècles et maintenant réduite à peau de chagrin. Elle veut voir et filmer ce qui perdure de cette histoire révolue: Dans les paysages, les paroles, les mémoires et l’imaginaire des Marocains d’aujourd’hui – dont les plus jeunes n’ont jamais vécu avec des juifs.
« Ziyara », c’est la visite aux saints, une pratique populaire commune aux juifs et aux musulmans du Maroc. Aujourd’hui les juifs sont presque tous partis, mais leurs saints sont toujours là.
La réalisatrice va à la rencontre de leurs gardiens, humbles et magnifiques protecteurs musulmans de sa mémoire juive. La blessure de la séparation est encore béante, l’écho des guerres d’Orient plane silencieusement sur la rencontre, mais la caméra retisse le lien, recueille anecdotes, sourires, hospitalité et bénédictions, portant le film vers une nouvelle complicité entre filmeuse et filmés.

NOTE DE LA RÉALISATRICE
« Depuis plus de trente ans, je sonde et je raconte les relations entre juifs et arabes, entre juifs et musulmans. Je l’ai surtout fait en Palestine, où j’ai souvent filmé le pire. Au Maroc, il s’agissait plutôt de filmer ce qui relevait du meilleur et qui résiste encore étonnamment après avoir failli disparaître trop tôt, comme on dit de quelqu’un qu’il est mort trop jeune. J’ai voulu traduire par des images, des sons, des mots et des visages cette disposition humaine un peu anachronique qui porte le nom de fraternité, une exception presque incongrue tant la violence du conflit israélo-palestinien semble avoir balayé toute perspective de relations apaisées entre juifs et musulmans de par le monde.
Un humble gardien de cimetière heureux de retrouver la tombe juive qu’on est venu chercher, une jeune conservatrice qui dit « Bismillah » en touchant un rouleau de Torah… J’ai voulu additionner ces petits riens dans un film qui offrirait ce que l’anthropologue marocain Aomar Boum décrit comme un récit d’espoir dans un monde rempli de haine, de xénophobie, d’islamophobie et d’antisémitisme. »

Ziyara
Morocco had a Jewish population of more than 300,000 until the 1950s. From that time on, until just after the Six Day War in June 1967, a flood of emigrants left for countries such as France, Israel, and America. Filmmaker Simone Bitton’s family settled in France.
In Ziyara (a term that refers to a form of pilgrimage to sacred places), Bitton returns to her homeland and searches for the traces the Jews have left behind. There is no shortage of these. Traveling by car-and taking the opportunity to include beautiful shots of the passing landscape-Bitton makes a tour of Jewish heritage in towns and villages. She discovers cemeteries, remnants of the Mellah (the Jewish quarter), synagogues, and schools-places often lovingly and reverently maintained by the local people. Bitton talks to them about the importance of heritage conservation, and their devotion, as well as about the relationship between Jews and Muslims. One of them muses: what would Morocco be like today if the Jews had stayed?
