En 2013, une décision de la Cour constitutionnelle de la République dominicaine a annulé les droits de citoyenneté de plus de 200 000 résidents d’origine haïtienne nés en République dominicaine. Une montée de la politique populiste a également vu surgir des foules violentes dans tout le pays, déterminées à voir la destruction des Dominicains noirs qui vivaient déjà sous la menace constante de la déportation. Face à l’indignation internationale, le gouvernement a mis en place un processus de régularisation, mais pour une durée limitée. Dans une course contre la montre, Pikilina, 23 ans, doit se démener pour rassembler les documents nécessaires pour prouver sa citoyenneté et l’obtenir aussi pour ses deux enfants. Ce terrible regard sur le visage du nationalisme survient plus de 80 ans après que le dictateur Rafael Trujillo a ordonné le massacre de plus de 12 000 Haïtiens vivant à la frontière nord. Avec l’histoire d’une femme de lutte, MASSACRE RIVER propose une étude sur la précarité de la vie noire et le fantasme odieux des frontières.

Massacre River: The Woman Without a Country
A documentary film about having to defend your right to belong in the only home you’ve ever known.
In 2013, a decision of the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic annulled the citizenship rights of more than 200,000 residents of Haitian origin born in the Dominican Republic. A rise in populist politics also saw violent crowds erupt across the country, determined to see the destruction of black Dominicans who were already living under the constant threat of deportation. In the face of international outrage, the government put in place a process of regularization, but for a limited period of time. In a race against time, Pikilina, 23, is struggling to gather the necessary documents to prove her citizenship and obtain it for her two children as well. This terrible look at the face of nationalism comes more than 80 years after dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the massacre of more than 12,000 Haitians living on the northern border. With the story of a woman of struggle, MASSACRE RIVER offers a study of the precariousness of black life and the odious fantasy of borders.
MASSACRE RIVER is a character-driven documentary that takes place in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, two ethnically and culturally distinct countries that have been forced to share an island since colonial times. The film follows Pikilina, a Dominican-born woman of Haitian decent, and her family. Racial and political violence erupt when the country of her birth, the Dominican Republic, reverses its birthright citizenship law, and she is left stateless, along with 250,000 others.

En 2013, una decisión del Tribunal Constitucional de la República Dominicana anuló los derechos de ciudadanía de más de 200.000 residentes de origen haitiano nacidos en la República Dominicana. El aumento de la política populista también dio lugar a la aparición de violentas multitudes en todo el país, decididas a ver la destrucción de los dominicanos negros que ya vivían bajo la constante amenaza de la deportación. Ante la indignación internacional, el gobierno puso en marcha un proceso de regularización, pero por un período limitado de tiempo. En una carrera contra el tiempo, Pikilina, de 23 años, está luchando por reunir los documentos necesarios para probar su ciudadanía y obtenerla también para sus dos hijos. Esta terrible mirada a la cara del nacionalismo llega más de 80 años después de que el dictador Rafael Trujillo ordenara la masacre de más de 12.000 haitianos que vivían en la frontera norte. Con la historia de una mujer de lucha, MASSACRE RIVER ofrece un estudio de la precariedad de la vida negra y la odiosa fantasía de las fronteras.
