Demba est sur le point de prendre sa retraite après 30 ans de service à la mairie de sa petite ville natale dans le nord du Sénégal. Au cours de cet été chaud, alors que le deuxième anniversaire de la mort de sa femme approche, Demba se rend compte qu’il est incapable de simplement « se détacher » de son décès. Mais comme sa santé mentale se détériore, il découvre un nouveau lien avec son fils dont il fut autrefois séparé. Demba peut-il se remettre de sa perte sans se perdre ?
Le film suit la vie d’un homme d’âge moyen pour explorer la tension entre le deuil et la guérison, l’appartenance et l’éloignement, la santé mentale et les troubles psychiatriques. Son inspiration provient d’une véritable question : comment une société qui n’a pas de mot pour « dépression » peut-elle s’en accommoder ?

Demba is about to retire after 30 years of service in the city hall of his small hometown in northern Senegal. During this hot summer, as the second anniversary of his wife’s death approaches, Demba realises that he is unable to simply « shake off » her passing. But as his mental health deteriorates, he discovers a new connection with his once estranged son. Can Demba recover from his loss without losing himself?

The film takes the life of a middle-aged man to explore the tension between grief and healing, belonging and estrangement, mental health and psychiatric disorder. Its inspiration stems from a genuine question: How can a society that does not have a word for « depression » come to terms with it?

Demba steht kurz vor seiner Pensionierung. 30 Jahre lang hat er im Rathaus einer kleinen Stadt im Norden Senegals gearbeitet. In diesem heißen Sommer jährt sich der Todestag seiner Frau zum zweiten Mal. Demba muss erkennen, dass es ihm nicht gelingt, über den Verlust hinwegzukommen. Während sich sein psychischer Zustand weiter verschlechtert, entdeckt er die Beziehung zu seinem Sohn neu, der ihm zwischenzeitlich fremd geworden war. Kann Demba seine Trauer bewältigen, ohne sich selbst zu verlieren?
Der Film erforscht das Spannungsfeld zwischen Trauer und Heilung, Zugehörigkeit und Entfremdung, mentaler Gesundheit und psychischen Störungen am Beispiel eines Mannes mittleren Alters. Dahinter steht die Frage: Wie kann eine Gesellschaft, die kein Wort für das Krankheitsbild Depression hat, mit Depressionen umgehen?
