Pour son dernier documentaire FAVORITEN, Ruth Beckermann a passé trois ans à suivre une classe d'élèves, âgés de sept à dix ans, et leur enseignante dévouée dans une grande école primaire "à risque" dans un quartier traditionnellement ouvrier et ethniquement diversifié de Vienne. Nous apprenons à connaître les enfants en tant qu'individus alors que nous vivons leurs aventures quotidiennes, leurs luttes, leurs défaites et leurs victoires dans ce microcosme de la société contemporaine d'Europe occidentale : une société aux prises avec des problèmes d'identité et de migration.
Mais par-dessus tout, FAVORITEN est une ode à l'enfance et à l'éducation qui s'appuie sur le style caractéristique de Beckermann consistant à poser des questions approfondies et importantes de manière observationnelle, invitant le public à naviguer à sa façon à travers des sujets complexes.

For her latest documentary FAVORITEN, Ruth Beckermann spent three years following a class of pupils, from the ages of seven to ten, and their devoted teacher at a large, ‘at risk' primary school in an ethnically diverse, traditionally working-class district in Vienna. We get to know the children as individuals as we experience their daily adventures, struggles, defeats and victories in this microcosm of contemporary western European society: a society struggling with issues of identity and migration.
But above all, FAVORITEN is an ode to childhood and education that builds on Beckermann's trademark style of asking probing, important questions in an observational way, inviting the audience to navigate their own way through complex topics.
