Sarah Maldoror, cinéaste guadeloupéenne née en métropole, est une activiste politique française.
Co-écrit par son mari Mario de Andrade (leader du mouvement de lutte pour l’indépendance de l’Angola), « Sambizanga » est basé sur un événement réel : l’arrestation et l’incarcération d’un militant, père de famille, et les conséquences de sa disparition pour son fils et sa femme… Tout comme ses autres réalisations (« Fogo », « Damas », « Monagambe »), ce film dénonce l’oppression coloniale et a permis l’émergence d’une parole résistante.
« Il faut lutter contre le regard des autres, déclare la réalisatrice, il peut être terrible ».

Figure majeure du cinéma africain disparue en 2020, Sarah Maldoror, née en France, a tourné en Algérie et dans l’Afrique lusophone de nombreux films, fictions et documentaires engagés en faveur de la décolonisation. Notamment ce Sambizanga, aujourd’hui retrouvé, qui retrace les débuts de la lutte pour l’indépendance en Angola. Domingos, ouvrier sur un chantier, agit pour un réseau clandestin et se trouve enlevé, torturé. Sa femme le recherche. Le film brille par la force poétique de son montage, tandis que le choix d’une figure herculéenne pour l’interprétation du disparu tire le film vers une forme de geste héroïque qui rend d’autant plus troublant et sensible cet hommage aux combattants de l’ombre – hommes, femmes, enfants, vieillards. – FM (Festival des 3 Continents 2022, Nantes)

Sambizanga is set during Angola’s struggle for liberation from Portuguese domination, and tells the story of Maria Xavier’s search for her husband, a worker, who has been imprisoned and tortured by the secret police. Focusing on her day-to-day existence during the struggle, Maria’s physical journey gradually also marks the awakening of her political consciousness.

Guadeloupean-born director Sarah Maldoror was married to one of the leaders of the Angolan struggle for independence and devoted her filmmaking career to raising international awareness of the African liberation struggles.
An ambitious film by a highly accomplished filmmaker, Sambizanga won the first prize at the 1972 Carthage Film Festival.

A leading figure of African cinema who died in 2020, French-born Sarah Maldoror made numerous films in Algeria and Portuguese-speaking Africa, including politically engaged documentaries and fiction films on decolonisation. In particular, the recently rediscovered Sambizanga, which follows the early days of the struggle for independence in Angola. Domingos, a construction worker and member of the underground resistance, is arrested and tortured. The film is outstanding for the poetic power of its editing, and the choice of a Herculean figure to play the missing man pushes the film towards a kind of heroic gesture that confers an even more troubling and sensitive note on this tribute to the combatants of the shadows – men, women, children, old people.
