Birahima, orphelin guinéen d'une dizaine d'années, raconte avec ironie comment il est précipité dans la guerre en tentant de rejoindre sa tante au Libéria. Yacouba, un homme douteux, le convainc de devenir enfant soldat, tandis qu'il devient grigriman et féticheur parmi les combattants. Baladé entre les factions ennemies, Birahima grandit en accéléré et apprend à se méfier des histoires qu'on lui raconte.
