Un des cinéastes américains majeurs. Un documentariste qui dissèque méthodiquement la société américaine.
Il est aussi metteur en scène de théâtre et auteur de plusieurs publications.

Sur Frederick Wiseman :
Depuis la fin des années 60, le cinéaste américain Frederick Wiseman a développé, grâce à la télévision de service public aux Etats-Unis, une ?uvre exceptionnelle de quelque trente-cinq longs métrages documentaires, de Titicut Follies à Public Housing, en passant par High School, Law and Order ou Deaf and Blind. Les institutions qu’il filme en début de carrière – prison, hôpital, lycée, caserne, centre d’aide sociale, etc. – portent des problèmes complexes que le cinéaste va  » accoucher « , non sans humour : lourdeurs, conformisme, inégalités, pesanteurs avouées ou inavouées de la société américaine (et de la nôtre !) construisent-elles l’image du  » rêve américain  » ou du  » cauchemar climatisé  » ? L’une et l’autre, tout en y apportant une interrogation bien plus large sur la condition humaine. Au fil du temps, cette ?uvre est devenue un classique du monde occidental puisque, pour nous autres Européens, rien de ce qui est nord-américain ne nous est véritablement étranger.
Philippe Pilard (universitaire, auteur et réalisateur de nombreux portraits de cinéastes, il a publié en 2006 un livre de référence sur Wiseman « Frederick Wiseman, chroniqueur du monde occidental » aux éditions Cerf-Corlet.
