Derrick Hodge a commencé la bass électrique à l’âge de 7 ans, inspiré par le jeu de Joel Ruffiin, bassiste des choeurs de l’Eglise Baptiste Beulah à West Philadelphia.
Derrick a enregistré près de 100 albums avec des grands noms comme Donald Byrd, Bootsie Barnes, Donnie McClurkin, Kenny Lattimore, Q-Tip, Timbaland, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Gerald Levert, Common, Kanye West, Andre 3000, Sade, Anthony Hamilton, Terence Blanchard, Mulgrew Miller, Clark Terry, entre autres.

Derrick Hodge is currently the bass player and a composer with Terrence Blanchard’s jazz band. He composed the score for the documentary Who the F@#k is Jackson Pollack and tracks for Spike Lee’s Inside Man. He attended Berkelee College of Music and received a bachelor’s degree in Music (emphasis on jazz and composition) from Temple University. Hodge has performed and/or recorded with Donald Byrd, Kanye West, Will Smith, Jill Scott, Bootsy Barnes, Q-Tip, Terell Stafford, Mos Def and many others.
Derrick Hodge began studying electric bass at the age of 7, inspired by the playing of West Philadelphia’s Beulah Baptist Church choirs bassist, Joel Ruffiin. He considers himself a product of a hotbed of talent from Willingboro, NJ, as well as the greater Philadelphia region which had a thriving Gospel, Jazz, Classical, R&B and emerging Hip Hop scene. Hodge received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Temple University Ester Boyer College of Music where he studied Jazz Composition and Performance.
As a professional, Derrick has been recorded on nearly 100 albums to date with names such as Donald Byrd, Bootsie Barnes, Donnie McClurkin, Kenny Lattimore, Q-Tip, Timbaland, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Gerald Levert, Common, Kanye West, Andre 3000, Sade, Anthony Hamilton, Terence Blanchard, Mulgrew Miller, Clark Terry, and others. Being granted the opportunities to write for artists in the past has enabled him to be identified as a writer in various genres of music ranging from Jazz and Orchestral Chamber music to Film Scoring, Hip Hop and R&B. His most recent projects include the HBO Documentary « The Recruiter » by Edet Belzburg, as well as « The Black Candle » directed by M.K. Asante, and his writing can be heard in films such as « When The Levees Broke », as well as « Miracle at St. Anna », as an additional composer. Hodge is currently writing music for his band and will be premiering his commissioned piece « Infinite Reflections » with the Chicago Symphony this fall.
