She is South African, and her name is Zandile Gumede. At 35 (in 1997), this Zulu woman is the leading light of Amaoti, an immense district on the outskirts of Durban, the country's third-largest city. Modest, devoted, brilliant and respected, Zandile draws her strength from Ubuntu, the ancestral belief that a person exists only through others. Abolished in 1990, apartheid has left after-effects in South Africa that are hard to expunge. For women in particular, the fight goes on-against ignorance, violence, machismo, and oppressive customs. Zandile is at the heart of this fight. Along with other women like her, she personifies the future of the country.
