De l’Exil est né le « Boukake »…
Depuis sa formation en 1998, l’aventure du groupe LES BOUKAKES a été partagée par une vingtaine de musiciens et chanteurs méditerranéens : mélodies orientales, funk, rock, … un mélange original de styles aussi surprenants qu’enivrants !
Leur nom (boukake ou quand deux insultes – bougnoule et macaque- donnent naissance à une troisième…) c’est un limonadier en mal de poésie qui leur a inspiré. Qu’à cela ne tienne, la bande prouvera que « boukake » n’a rien d’insultant, qu’il est même l’expression d’un métissage réussi entre l’Orient et l’Occident, entre le raï, le rock, le funk et la pop.
Après quelques années à affûter ses arguments, de rues en bistrots, de petites salles en grandes scènes, le groupe s’est affirmé et a rencontré un large public à l’affiche de prestigieux festivals, au coté de FEMI KUTI, MANU DIBANGO, KHALED, TINARIWEN ou autres TARAF DE HAIDOUKS…
En 2001, ils enregistrent l’album MAKACH MOUCH’KIL (collaboration chants A.Bekhechi & D.Meghraoui).
Une première réalisation très bien accueillie par les médias :
« Ils emmêlent joyeusement groove, raï, arabo-andalou et musique gnawa dans un cocktail tonique. Tourneries irrépressibles, voix vigoureuses, c’est assurément un excellent groupe. » LIBERATION
« Mélodies orientales, funk et rock pour un résultat aussi tonique que dansant. » ROCK’N FOLK
Mais c’est en 2004 que leur musique se fait remarquer :
Les Boukakes sont finalistes des Découvertes du PRINTEMPS de BOURGES 2004 ; ils sont également lauréats du très convoité Fair 2004 et sont invités au Strictly Mundial d’Istanbul (annulé). La chaîne européenne ARTE a choisi de suivre leur parcours pour une série de documentaires consacrés aux coulisses du Printemps de Bourges.
L’année ne pouvait que bien se fêter, avec la sortie de l’ album BLEDI (collaboration chant B.Mokhtar).
Le disque regorge de savants mélanges entre raï, rock, pop, musique gnawa, électro, reggae… Et prouve que le mariage de l’Orient et de l’Occident est possible ; il peut même être heureux !
2005-2008 fut consacré au public, avec une tournée de 150 concerts à travers une vingtaine de pays. A noter les participations au Womex 2005, au Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, Paléo Festival, Sziget Festival, Amsterdam Roots, Sakifo Festival, Timitar Festival Maroc etc…
Ils ont été nominés, aux BBC Awards de Musiques du Monde 2007.
En 2009 ils produisent MARRA (collaboration chant B.Mokhtar & co-réalisé par Philippe Eidel et Franck Redlich).

En octobre 2012 sortira leur 4ème album PUNKY HALAL (collaboration chant S.Maziz).
Pour cette réalisation qui révèle un nouveau son, ils ont décidé d’approfondir la rencontre de la musique orientale avec le rock occidental, en mariant des sonorités et instruments traditionnels avec la musique électronique.

The Exile gave birth to the « Boukake »…
Since the creation in 1998, the adventure of the band LES BOUKAKES has been shared with about 20 musicians and singers coming from all over the Mediterranean sea.
This mixture turns out to be the perfect combination of oriental and western influences, raï, rock, funk and pop.
Their name itself is a reply to some of the less than friendly comments they received in their time on the streets, »Boukake » being a phonetic mixture of two typical racist insults. But for them, that did not have anything of degrading, because the « Boukake » was born during the long trip of exile, a rich child of the world and its prohibited loves. Without making ostensible political comments in their songs, this deliberate attitude says something for their resistance to bias and ignorance generally.
After a few years, from the street to bars, from small concerts to festivals, they finally met their audience, sharing the stages with famous bands like like FEMI KUTI, MANU DIBANGO, KHALED, TINARIWEN, TARAF DE HAIDOUKS… and others…
In 2001, they recorded the album Makach Mouch’kil (in collaboration with the singers A.Bekhechi & D.Meghraoui). That first work got a great reception from the media. The lyrics with oriental melodies harmoniously swing on musics either rock, groove, electronic, rai, or gnawa.
But it was in 2004 that their music (raï n’rock) was spotted :
They won professional prizes (FAIR, Découvertes Printemps de Bourges..) and an European TV channel, ARTE, chose to follow their development for documentaries.
They celebrated the end of the year with the release of a brand new album Bledi (in collaboration with the singer B.Mokhtar).
The Raï and Rock Music of that album proves that the combination of Orient and Occident is possible and it can be Happy !
From 2005 to 2008, to share that new album with the audience, the band is on tour with more than 150 concerts in 20 different countries. Notice their participation at the Festival international of Jazz of Montréal, the Paléo festival, the WOMEX 2005, the Sziget Festival, Sakifo Festival, Amsterdam Roots Festival, Timitar Festival Morocco etc…
They have been nominated for The BBC Awards For World music 2007.
In 2008 they recorded Marra (in collaboration with the singer B.Mokhtar).

In October 2012, they will release their fourth album, PUNKY HALAL (in collaboration with the singer S.Maziz).
For this production, that reveals a new sound, they decided to deepen the meeting of Eastern music with Western rock, combining sounds and traditional instruments with electronic music.
