Tubby King

Né à Kingston Jamaica le 28 Janvier 1941, son premier boulot fut réparateur de radios et c’est vers la fin des années 50 qu’il commence à cotoyer le milieu des sound-systems et leurs machines. C’est vers 1964 qu’il incorpore à son propre amplifieur une reverb boostée et des possibilitées d’ effets d’échos et découvre qu’il peut ainsi remixer la plupart des grands « Tunes » de l’époque. C’est en jouant avec les fréquences des sons qu’il put « cutter » la voix sur les morceaux, laissant ainsi la possibilité à l’animateur de sound-system de s’exprimer sur un riddim (…)

King Tubby (January 28, 1941 – February 6, 1989) was a Jamaican electronics and sound engineer, known primarily for his influence on the development of dub in the 1960s and 1970s. Born Osbourne Ruddock, Tubby’s innovative studio work, which saw him elevate the role of the mixing engineer to a creative fame previously only reserved for composers and musicians, would prove to be influential across many genres of popular music.
