M’hamed Benguettaf

Mohamed Benguettaf (ou M'hamed Benguettaf – امحمد بن قطاف) né le 20 décembre 1939 est une figure marquante du théâtre et du cinéma algérien.



D’abord comme comédien, M’Hamed Benguettaf a travaillé pour la radio puis a passé une grande partie de sa carrière au Théâtre National Algérien, avant de figurer parmi les fondateurs de la compagnie Masrah El Kalâa – Théâtre de la Citadelle. Également comme traducteur ou adaptateur de Nazim Hikmet, Kateb Yacine, Ali Salem, Mahmoud Diab ou Ray Bradbury, Benguettaf estime avoir bouclé la première grande étape de son parcours qu’il assimile, suivant ses propres termes, à "un stage de formation professionnelle", étape à la faveur de laquelle il pense avoir réuni les outils de son propre langage et s’être forgé désormais sa voix d’auteur dramatique.



En 2003, son adaptation contemporaine de "Don Quichotte L’homme qui n’y était pour rien", une co-production algéro-française qui a reçu le label Djazaïr, une année de l’Algérie en France. Depuis 2004, Mohamed Benguettaf dirigeait le Théâtre National Algérien. Il est décédé à Alger le 5 janvier 2014.

Mohamed Benguettaf (or M'hamed Benguettaf – امحمد بن قطاف) born December 20, 1939 is a notable figure in Algerian theater and cinema.



First as an actor, M'Hamed Benguettaf worked for radio then spent a large part of his career at the Algerian National Theater, before being among the founders of the company Masrah El Kalâa – Théâtre de la Citadelle. Also as translator or adapter of Nazim Hikmet, Kateb Yacine, Ali Salem, Mahmoud Diab or Ray Bradbury, Benguettaf believes he has completed the first major stage of his journey which he likens, in his own words, to "a professional training course" , a stage through which he believes he has gathered the tools of his own language and has now forged his voice as a playwright.



In 2003, his contemporary adaptation of "Don Quixote, The Man Who Had Nothing to Do with It", an Algerian-French co-production which received the Djazaïr label, a year of Algeria in France. Since 2004, Mohamed Benguettaf has directed the Algerian National Theater. He died in Algiers on January 5, 2014.
