Robert Castel (en arabe :روبرت كاستل), de son vrai nom Robert Adolphe Moyal, est un acteur, musicien et humoriste, né le 21 mai 1933 à Alger dans le quartier de Bab El-Oued, en Algérie.

Robert Castel débute comme musicien, joueur de tar, puis guitariste, accompagnant son père, compositeur violoniste, et chanteur de chansons légères francarabes. Jeune comédien dans la troupe du Centre régional d'art dramatique d'Alger, Robert Castel joue le rôle de Robert Le Bègue dans le spectacle d'improvisation théâtrale sur la vie des pieds-noirs, La Famille Hernandez, qui est créé par Geneviève Baïlac le 17 septembre 1957 à Paris. Ayant fait ses premières armes au music-hall, Robert Castel commence sa carrière cinématographique à l'âge de 24 ans dans Les Amants De Demain de Marcel Blistène, puis dans Un témoin dans la ville d'Édouard Molinaro.

En 1962, Robert Castel quitte l’Algérie nouvellement indépendante et s’installe à Paris avec Lucette Sahuquet (décédée en 1987), qu’il épouse. Le couple inaugure cette année ses sketchs en duo, notamment à l’Olympia où ils enchaînent les premières parties de Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich et Philippe Clay. Dans les années 1970, l’humoriste, vif et provocateur, multiplie les sketchs télévisés avec sa partenaire fétiche ou encore Enrico Macias. Pour le grand écran, ce comédien brun, au front dégagé, qui parle avec les mains, abandonne son registre de prédilection. Devenu la figure de «l'humour pied-noir» en France, il jouera aux côtés d’Edith Piaf dans Les Amants de demain de Marcel Blistène, de Pierre Richard dans Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire d’Yves Robert, ou d’Isabelle Huppert dans Dupont Lajoie d’Yves Boisset. En 1982, il fait une apparition remarquée dans le cinéma algérien en jouant dans Hassan taxi, réalisé par Mohamed Slim Riad, aux cotés de Rouiched (Ahmed Ayad), Ouardia Hamitouche et Sidali Kouiret. Il tourne au total dans plus d’une trentaine de films, jusqu’au début des années 2000.

Robert Castel se fait discret quelques années avant de retrouver la scène, cette fois-ci musicale, en 2007 grâce au projet El-Gusto. Ce projet, qui s'efforce de réunir les musiciens algérois, juifs et musulmans ayant fait partie de l'orchestre Chaâbi algérois de Hadj M'hamed El Anka au début des années 1950, s'est soldé par un film documentaire primé à l'étranger, l'enregistrement d'un album et une tournée internationale qui a emmené une troupe de 42 musiciens dans des pays comme la France, le Maroc, la Tunisie, la Suisse, la Belgique, les États-Unis ou encore les Pays-Bas.

En 2008, Robert Castel signe son autobiographie, Je pose 75 [son âge], mais je retiens tout. Il remonte sur scène en 2013 pour présenter son dernier one-man-show, "Nostalgérie". Il décède le 5 décembre 2020 à Paris, à l'âge de 87 ans.

Robert Castel began as a musician, tar player, then guitarist, accompanying his father, composer violinist, and singer of light French-Arab songs. Young actor in the troupe of the Regional Center of Dramatic Art of Algiers, Robert Castel plays the role of Robert Le Bègue in the theatrical improvisation show on the life of the pieds-noirs, La Famille Hernandez, which is created by Geneviève Baïlac on September 17, 1957 in Paris. Having cut his teeth in music hall, Robert Castel began his film career at the age of 24 in Les Amants De Demain by Marcel Blistène, then in Un témoin dans la ville by Édouard Molinaro.

In 1962, Robert Castel left the newly independent Algeria and settled in Paris with Lucette Sahuquet (who died in 1987), whom he married. The couple inaugurated their sketches as a duo that year, notably at the Olympia where they opened for Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich and Philippe Clay. In the 1970s, the comedian, lively and provocative, did a lot of television sketches with his favorite partner and Enrico Macias. For the big screen, this dark-haired comedian, with a clear forehead, who speaks with his hands, abandoned his favorite register. Having become the figure of "pied-noir humor" in France, he played alongside Edith Piaf in Les Amants de demain by Marcel Blistène, Pierre Richard in Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire by Yves Robert, and Isabelle Huppert in Dupont Lajoie by Yves Boisset. In 1982, he made a notable appearance in Algerian cinema by playing in Hassan taxi, directed by Mohamed Slim Riad, alongside Rouiched (Ahmed Ayad), Ouardia Hamitouche and Sidali Kouiret. Robert Castel kept a low profile for a few years before returning to the stage, this time in a musical, in 2007 thanks to the El-Gusto project. This project, which seeks to bring together Algerian, Jewish and Muslim musicians who were part of Hadj M'hamed El Anka's Algiers Chaâbi orchestra in the early 1950s, resulted in a documentary film that won international awards, the recording of an album and an international tour that took a troupe of 42 musicians to countries such as France, Morocco, Tunisia, Switzerland, Belgium, the United States and the Netherlands.
