Né le 24 Avril 1964 au Benin. Djimon Hounsou s’établit à Paris à 13 ans et devient à 22 ans mannequin vedette de Thierry Mugler. Il collabore ainsi à plusieurs collections et à un album du couturier, puis apparaît dans trois vidéos réalisées par David Fincher : Roll With It de Steve Winwood, Express Yourself de Madonna et Straight Up de Paula Abdul. Il pose également pour le livre de photos d’Herbert Ritts Men and women et participe à la vidéo de Janet Jackson Love Will Never Do Without You. En 1990, Djimon Hounsou se rend à Los Angeles pour poursuivre une carrière d’acteur. Deux ans plus tard, il tient un petit rôle dans le thriller de Jonathan Kaplan Obsession fatale (1992), suivi en 1994 d’une participation à la grosse production de science-fiction de Roland Emmerich Stargate, la porte des étoiles. En 1997, il est la révélation majeure du drame de Steven Spielberg, Amistad, où le rôle du chef des esclaves Cinque lui vaut une citation au Golden Globe et l’Image Award de la NAACP. Son physique bodybuildé et ses origines africaines le cantonnent souvent aux films d’action et aux rôles d' »indigène ». En témoignent ses prestations de combattant, coéquipier de Russell Crowe, dans Gladiator (2000), de détective dans Le Boulet (2002), de soldat soudanais dans Frères du désert (id.), de motard dans Biker boyz (2003) et de chef tribal dans Lara Croft Tomb Raider le berceau de la vie (id.). Jim Sheridan lui permet toutefois de varier son jeu d’acteur en lui confiant le rôle d’un mystérieux artiste peintre, voisin d’une famille irlandaise fraîchement débarquée à New York, dans In America (2004).

Djimon Hounsou is a two-time Academy Award-nominated actor for his work in the films In America and Blood Diamond. Hounsou was honored with an NAACP Image Award, a National Board of Review citation and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for his role as Solomon Vandy in Blood Diamond. For his role as Mateo in In America, Hounsou won an Independent Spirit Award, was named the 2004 ShoWest Supporting Actor of the Year and shared in a SAG Award nomination for Outstanding Cast Performance. Born in Benin, West Africa, Hounsou moved to Paris at the age of 13 to get a better education. As an adult, he was discovered by fashion designer Thierry Mugler and then worked with legendary photographer Herb Ritts. Small film roles followed before Hounsou’s breakthrough role came in 1997 as Cinque, the African who leads an uprising to regain his freedom in Steven Spielberg’s historical drama Amistad.
