Mustapha Badie

Mustapha Badie is a director and actor born in Algiers in 1927. His real name is Arezki Berkouk (أرزقي برقوق), he made his debut in the municipal troupe of the Arab theater of the Algiers Opera, created by Mahieddine Bachtarzi and Mustapha Kateb , before acquiring training in the old RTF.



A l’indépendance, sous le nom de Mustapha Badie, il tourne Nos Mères une dramatique de long-métrage inspirée des "Enfants de la Casbah", la pièce de Abdelhalim Raïs. Avec "La Nuit a Peur du Soleil" ensuite, sous la forme d’une imposante fresque de plus de trois heures pour le cinéma, il s’attelle à une relecture de la société algérienne durant la décennie 1952-1962. En quatre tableaux ("La Terre avait soif", "Les Chemins de la prison", "Histoire de Saliha" et "Histoire de Fatma"), Mustapha Badie n’hésite pas à en dire beaucoup en un seul film. Il récidive avec "L’Évasion de Hassan Terro", d’après le personnage de Rouïched, mais c’est surtout le succès du feuilleton "El Harik" (L’Incendie), adapté de la trilogie de  Mohamed Dib "La Grande Maison", "L’Incendie" et "Le Metier à Tisser", pour le petit écran en 10 épisodes, qui lui vaut un exceptionnel succès populaire et immortalise au passage le personnage de La Aïni , en propulsant son interprète, la comédienne Chafia Boudraa, vers la notoriété. Tout en continuant à tourner pour la télévision 'Le Chant du Souvenir", "Kenza", puis "Hassan Ibn Ali", Mustapha Badie est resté un artisan discret à l’instar de nombreux artistes et techniciens de sa génération qui ne trouvaient plus leurs marques dans un pays en pleine ébullition.



L’artiste a tiré sa révérence le 27 juin 2001 à Alger, des suites d’une longue maladie.

At independence, under the name Mustapha Badie, he shot Our Mothers, a feature-length drama inspired by "Children of the Casbah", the play by Abdelhalim Raïs. He does it again with "The Escape of Hassan Terro", based on the character of Rouïched, but it is above all the success of the soap opera "El Harik" (The Fire), adapted from Mohamed Dib's trilogy "The Big House ", "L'Incendie" and "Le Metier à Tisser", for the small screen in 10 episodes, which earned it exceptional popular success and immortalized in passing the character of La Aïni, by propelling its interpreter, the actress Chafia Boudraa, towards notoriety. While continuing to film 'Le Chant du Souvenir', 'Kenza', then 'Hassan Ibn Ali' for television, Mustapha Badie remained a discreet artisan like many artists and technicians of his generation who no longer found their brands in a country in turmoil.



The artist bowed out on June 27, 2001 in Algiers, following a long illness.
