William Greaves

Documentariste et réalisateur afro‑américain né en 1926 à New York et mort en 2014, William Greaves est l'une des figures majeures du cinéma indépendant noir aux États‑Unis. Ancien acteur et membre de l'Actors Studio, il s'impose comme cinéaste avec des films qui explorent l'histoire et la pensée afro‑américaines, parmi lesquels The First World Festival of Negro Arts (1966), Nationtime (1972) ou Ida B. Wells: A Passion for Justice (1989). Son Å“uvre la plus célèbre, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One (1968), film expérimental sur le dispositif même du tournage, a été sélectionnée au National Film Registry. Once Upon a Time in Harlem est son projet resté inachevé autour d'une réunion de figures du Harlem Renaissance, que son fils David reprend et achève plus de cinquante ans après le tournage.

Avec sa société, fondée en 1968, il a produit près de 200 films. Il a travaillé à la série d'émissions de télévision Black Journal de 1968 à 1970.

He is one of the key figures of Black independent cinema in the United States. A former actor and member of the Actors Studio, he established himself as a filmmaker with works that explore African American history and thought, including The First World Festival of Negro Arts (1966), Nationtime (1972) and Ida B. Wells: A Passion for Justice (1989). His best‑known film, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One (1968), an experimental work about the very apparatus of filmmaking, has been selected for the National Film Registry. Once Upon a Time in Harlem is the project he left unfinished, built around a gathering of figures from the Harlem Renaissance, which his son David has taken up and completed more than fifty years after the shoot.
