Roberto Stephenson was born in Rome in 1964 to a Haitian father and Italian mother. He has lived in Rome (Italy), Aleppo (Syria), Amman (Jordan), New York (USA), Ahmedabad (India) and London (UK). He now lives in Port-au-Prince (Haiti).
After studying engineering and graphic art, he turned to architectural photography and for a number of years worked with magazines and books such as L’Industria, delle Costruzioni, The World Of Interiors, Domus, Modo, Roma S.Marcello, Palazzi, Palazzetti e Case a Roma, Palazzi Storici del Banco di Roma – Genova De Ferrari … until he moved to Haiti.In Haiti Roberto Stephenson has worked as a photographer, graphic artist and ad man for local companies. He has also continued his personal work in digital photography, which he is regularly invited to exhibit internationally. His photos have been exhibited during the Biennale de la Caraibe de Santo-Domingo (Dominican Republic, 2001) where he was awarded a gold medal, in Martinique during the Rencontres photographiques en Caraïbe (2001), in Havana at the 5th Salon Internacional de Arte Digital (Cuba, 2003), in Oslo at the House of Art Museum (Norway, 2003) and during the 5th Rencontres de la photographie africaine in Bamako (Mali, 2003) where he was awarded the EU prize.
He is strongly involved in promoting Haiti’s visual arts and co-created the Fondation M’WE’M in Port-au-Prince in 2003.
A first book of his photographs has recently been published under the title Intérieurs d’Haïti (Editions M’WE’M, 2003).
