English
The Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg was founded in 1991 as a non-profit limited liability company. Today, it is one of the most renowned international film schools. The project-oriented curriculum triggers learning by doing during all the different stages of a film and television production and thus makes studying at the Film Academy a unique experience. More than 300 highly qualified experts from the film and media business instruct the students and take care of their projects.
About 250 films of all genres and formats with top rankings on international festivals are being produced every year by teams of students enrolled in scriptwriting, directing (documentary film, fiction film, advertising film, tv journalism), cinematograhpy, editing, animation, series formats, interactive media, production, filmmusic / sound design, motion design, and production design.
Proof of the Filmakademie’s successful philosophy of teaching are the Golden Leopard awarded to « Das Verlangen / The Longing » at the International Film Festival Locarno (2002), an Oscar nomination for « Das Rad / Rocks » in the category « Best Animated Short Film » (2003), the Student Oscar for « Nimmermeer / Nevermore » in the category « Best Foreign Film » (2007), and many more awards at film festivals at home and abroad.
In 2000, the Filmakademies international appeal was further enhanced by the introduction of the Atelier Ludwigsburg-Paris masterclass. During this one-year training programme, 18 European graduates from film schools or colleges with sufficient practical experience will gain comprehensive insight into financing, production, and distribution. They acquire the skills to initiate co-productions and to distribute their films in the European film market.
In 2002, the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg established its own Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction. Substantially independent in terms of content, organisation and finance, the Institute is taking over responsibility for the teaching of all students enrolled in the subject areas Animation an Interactive Media, for the digital postproduction of all projects produced at the Filmakademie, and for organizing the annual FMX – International Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Transmedia in Stuttgart.
The Animation Institute’s courses span a wide range of contents. Each of the following main areas provides plenty of opportunity for specialization: the production of animated short films, the creation of visual effects, the development of realtime animation, the conception of character-based animation formats, and the qualification as a technical director. All projects are realized in close collaboration with students from the Filmakademie’s other departments.
