Michael Stevenson has been dealing in South African art since 1990. Initially focusing on 19th and 20th century painting, as well as art from south-east Africa, the business expanded to encompass contemporary South African art in 2003 with the opening of a gallery in Green Point, Cape Town. The gallery celebrated its fifth birthday in May 2008 with a move to new premises in Woodstock, Cape Town.
The gallery has hosted a series of widely acclaimed solo and group exhibitions, most of which have been accompanied by catalogues. A stable of leading contemporary South African artists has also been assembled, and the gallery has broadened its ambit to include work by artists from elsewhere in Africa.
In November 2008 the gallery entered a partnership with David Brodie in Johannesburg, and his gallery (formerly Art Extra) is now Brodie/Stevenson (www.brodiestevenson.com). Located at 373 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall, Johannesburg, the gallery exhibits Michael Stevenson and Brodie/Stevenson artists, and associated artists on a project basis.
Michael Stevenson is an art historian who has published widely in the field of South African art history (see Books). He works closely with collectors and public galleries, and has curated many private and corporate collections.
The gallery staff includes Andrew da Conceicao, an experienced arts administrator; Sophie Perryer, founding editor of Art South Africa and editor of the book 10 Years 100 Artists: Art in a democratic South Africa; Joost Bosland, a graduate of Duke University; Federica Angelucci, with experience in photography in Milan and Paris; and Fiona Mauchan, with a Master’s degree in Art History from Stellenbosch University.
The gallery is located on the ground floor, Buchanan Building, 160 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock, 7925, Cape Town, and is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 10am-1pm.
