Ce film fait un état des lieux de ce quartier de la capitale algérienne, la Casbah d'Alger, qui a été inscrite sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’Humanité à la 16e session du Comité de l’UNESCO, en décembre 1992.



La Casbah compte 1 700 maisons et environ 80 000 habitants. À l’origine, le mot "casbah" désignait la citadelle qui, à l’ouest, surplombait la ville. Peu à peu le terme engloba la cité elle-même. Les remparts qui protégeaient la casbah ainsi que le haut et le bas de la cité ont aujourd’hui disparu…



Mais dans quel état se trouve la Casbah aujourd’hui ? Comment résiste t-elle aux catastrophes naturelles qui accablent régulièrement l’Algérie, située sur une faille tectonique fragile ? Aujourd’hui, deux associations tentent de sauver la Casbah, malgré la faiblesse des aides accordées et le désintérêt politique : "Sauvons la Casbah" et "Association Casbah".



Comment l’homme de la rue vit-il cela ? Ce film nous invite à naviguer entre passé et présent, entre mémoire et nostalgie. Au travers de ses habitants et des personnes actives à la restauration de ce cœur historique nous pénétrons dans ce labyrinthe escarpé de ruelles…

This film gives an overview of this district of the Algerian capital, the Kasbah of Algiers, which was listed as a World Heritage Site at the 16th session of the UNESCO Committee in December 1992. The Kasbah has 1,700 houses and about 80,000 inhabitants. Originally, the word "kasbah" referred to the citadel which, in the west, overlooked the city. Little by little the term included the city itself. The walls that protected the kasbah as well as the top and the bottom of the city have disappeared today… But in what state is the kasbah today? How does it resist the natural disasters that regularly overwhelm Algeria, located on a fragile geological fault? Today two associations are trying to save the Kasbah, despite the weakness of the aid granted and the political disinterest: "Save the Kasbah" and "Association Casbah". How does the man in the street experience this? This film invites us to surf between past and present, between memory and nostalgia. Through its inhabitants and the people active in the restoration of this historical heart, we enter this labyrinth of steep alleys …
