Goodbye Mothers

Mohamed Ismail’s Goodbye Mothers, expected to spark controversy in Morocco, dares to depict the peaceful co-existence in 1960s Casablanca of two families – one Muslim and one Jewish – during the historical period known as the « Black Years of Emigration, » when there Moroccan Jews faced a pervading sense of hesitation between two conflicting desires: remaining in Morocco or uprooting themselves to emigrate to Israel.
1960, the year is marked by waves of Jewish immigrants leaving in large numbers, influenced by Israeli immigration services.
The story related the solid bonds between two families, one Jewish, the other Muslim, Destiny will cruelly separate one family, leaving a noble mission to accomplish for the other.
The passionate bond between young couples from different religions backgrounds will be trounced by traditionalist parents. One man is ready to sell his business, pick up and leave, so that he can be with the loved ones.
A rabbi refuses to be uprooted. A devastating and incredible nostalgia of families on journey of uncertain adventure. All of this is awash and dominated with insecurity of what tomorrow holds. And only the courage and generosity of hearts can intensify this psychosis.
