Sayyed, écrivain célèbre, au faîte de la gloire et proche de la classe dirigeante, apprend le meurtre de son frère jumeau, Mahmoud. Ce dernier était marin et peintre, il vivait sans contraintes, loin de toute ambition sociale. Cette vie de bohème impressionnait Sayyed et constituait pour lui une source d’inspiration et était pour lui un moyen de se libérer du carcan social. A travers ses romans, il se glissait dans la peau de son frère et découvrait son univers magique.
Au cours de l’enquête, la police découvre que Mahmoud était sentimentalement proche de l’épouse de Sayyed ; par ailleurs, l’un des détectives relève un indice inquiétant : personne n’a jamais rencontré les deux jumeaux ensemble…
