Il y a 50 ans, les Etats-Unis étaient encore une société où les Blancs et les Noirs n’avaient pas les mêmes droits.
Il a fallu l’obstination des frères Kennedy puis de Lyndon Johnson pour que cesse en droit cette ségrégation. Puis il a fallu un consensus entre démocrates et républicains pour que cette égalité rentre peu à peu dans les faits, sous la pression des mesures de discrimination positive qui ont été au principe des politiques sociales des années 70 jusqu’à aujourd’hui.
En ce sens Barack Obama est fils de l’Amérique.
Ce film a pour objet de retracer le parcours, à la fois surprenant et si américain, qui a conduit une moitié de l’Amérique à se donner pour président potentiel un métis nommé Barack Obama, inconnu du grand public il y a 4 ans à peine.
Ce parcours est à la fois celui d’un homme, mais aussi celui de tout un peuple : cette partie non négligeable de l’Amérique qui, quelle que soit l’issue des prochaines élections, se sera retrouvée en lui.

But it was the political consensus between Democrats and Republicans that turned legal equality into reality, through measures of positive discrimination that had been the principal social foundations from the 1970’s until today.
One could therefore say that Barack Obama is a true ‘product’ of the United States, the son of America.
This documentary looks at the rise of Barack Obama – an astonishing and « very American » story that led one half of the USA to chose as potential president an African American who was unknown to the general public only four years ago.
