Max and Mona
Teddy Mattera, South Africa, 2004; 99m. In Tswana, Zulu, English and Afrikaans with English subtitles
« Absolutely brilliant, with sharp wit, tongue-in-cheek satire and clever plot »-The Herald
This kooky comedy from South Africa follows Max (Mpho Lovinga), a Candide-like innocent, who travels from the provinces to Johannesburg to attend school and become a doctor. Accidentally given the family’s sacred goat to bring to his ne’er-do-well Uncle Norman, Max finds himself (and the goat) mired in his uncle’s debts to an unscrupulous crime lord. When Uncle Norman discovers that Max, the most gifted professional mourner in the country, could be a profitable source of badly-needed cash, life takes an interesting turn.
Filmmaker Teddy Mattera creates a rollicking mix of farce and folly about a young boy’s coming of age and his wild adventure with a most unlikely partner-in-crime in this humorous and delightful contemporary tale.
