Si c'est une excellente nouvelle pour beaucoup, Star, 38 ans, risque de perdre sa maison. Les titres de propriété sont basés sur les liens de parenté, et comme sa filiation est inconnue et qu'elle n'est pas mariée, sa situation est précaire. Les choses prennent une autre tournure lorsque Star découvre une photo d'elle jeune dans The World Book of Nomads. Sur la photo, une main portant des marques tribales familières attire son attention, car ces marques sont celles d'une vendeuse de nourriture locale. Croyant que cette femme est sa mère dont elle est séparée, Star la rencontre mais la femme nie tout lien. Dans son combat pour conserver ses droits sur la terre, Star envisage plusieurs options : trouver le photographe étranger qui a pris la photo, ou proposer le mariage à un ami et signer un accord moralement discutable avec une ONG - un accord qui cependant la mettrait en conflit avec sa communauté.

The villagers of Sayit are about to receive title deeds, marking the first time in centuries they will claim legal ownership of their land. While this is great news for many, 38-year-old Star faces the risk of losing her home. The title deeds are based on kinship ties, and since her parentage is unknown and she is unmarried, her situation is precarious. Things take a turn when Star discovers a photograph of her younger self in The World Book of Nomads. In the picture, a mysterious hand with familiar tribal markings catches her attention, as she recognises those marks as belonging to a local food seller. Believing the woman to be her estranged mother, Star confronts her, but the woman denies any connection. Desperate to maintain her claim to the land, Star considers several options: finding the foreign photographer who took the picture, proposing marriage to a friend, and signing a morally questionable deal with an NGO. However, this deal puts her at loggerheads with her community.

Sin embargo, descubre una foto de ella de niña en una revista etnográfica. En la foto, una mano misteriosa con marcas tribales familiares posada sobre su hombro podría ayudarla a encontrar a su madre. La película sigue la encarnizada lucha de Star por conservar sus derechos sobre la tierra.
